  1. At least we were spared the Iron or zinc coinage suffered by much of Europe
  2. Ditto the wartime 1918KN penny, probably the poorest quality striking of all the 20th C bronze coins, almost impossible to find better than fine, dye cracks and flaws ++, and weird colour ?low tin
  3. Likewise the open "3" 1903 penny gets noted, but the two quite distinct terminal "8"s for 1898 are ignored by most authors, I suspect rarity=investment rather than numismatic interest dictates price and catalogue inclusion
  4. The 6 looks a bit odd. or is it just the lighting?
  5. My interest was kindled by getting a GVF bun penny (can't remember date) on the 23 bus, stunned by the design I started collecting other bun pennies as they came my way. Growing up in Liverpool when it was still a thriving seaport, there was a lot of foreign stuff in circulation; Irish, Australian and S.African pennies etc, as well as the odd French bronze 10c and Argentinian 2cvos. Still collect all bronze pennies I remember occasionally seeing very worn Victoria halfcrowns and shillings, but silver coins ate far too much into my pocket money to keep
  6. I have one - GF pulled from circulation many years ago. I've never seen another, and its very hard to spot on a poor photo of a worn coin.
  7. I'm keeping a close eye on all 2008 coins that come my way, with 2 obverse and 2 reverse dies for all values, there is a possibility of other mules, though they wont be as dramatic as the 20p
  8. This one got me excited momentarilly!!!! George V facing right
  9. Nice shiny 2009 2p in change today from the corner shop (S.Manchester)
  10. It will make it something, I'm not sure it will be English as we know it Thanks all, translations pretty much as I worked out the gist, an appropriate post given this topic title " Three quid down the Swanee..." I'll just write this one off! I'll still keep buying from overseas sellers, I often get good stuff at reasonable prices, and I've had very little difficulty with either overseas payment or postage
  11. hopefully this link works 1916 penny Sadly I'll never know - just got this from the seller "es gibt leider ein Problem mit der Münze - ich finde diese nicht mehr. Möglicherweise wurde sie von mir doppelt eingestellt, jedenfalls ist sie nicht mehr auffindbar. Ich habe Ihnen zudem keine andere Ersatzmünze von 1916 anzubieten. Gerne überweise ich den Betrag umgehend retour, falls Sie schon überwiesen haben. Möglicherweise haben Sie auch einen Ersatzvorschlag aus den von mir eingestellten Münzen, es können dann als Entschädigung auch gerne 2 Münzen sein. " My German isn't good, but I think he's not got the coin he advertised.
  12. Thank you!
  13. Most of us here have experimented how to get best images from our coins; using either flat bed scanners or cameras with varying decrees of success I came across this link microscope, this looks as though it may be useful for examining die varieties or errors, but probably not for imaging whole coins (unless they are very small). I suspect it may be useful to the bank note collector, but I foresee problems for examining with both depth of field and reflections from items with lustre. Has anyone here tried this or similar products? - if so please post some pictures.
  14. hopefully this link works 1916 penny
  15. This one had both sides pictured 1916 penny I'm hoping that it is a hollow neck with the broken tooth at BRITT: , always difficult on small photos, but at least only €1.92 invested
  16. Lots of 2009 1p here in S.Manchester, no sign yet of owt else
  17. Apologies, old geek slang Been there, done that, got the T-shirt
  18. BTDTGTTS! frustating trying to decide whether an "I" points to a space or a tooth on a blown up photo, or else nice coin but no picture of the side I'm really interested in
  19. BMC 2214. F 164A. Dies 1*+C. Near Fine, buckled. Rare - 17 bids and now up to £480 - anyone here ever seen one of these?

  22. the "1933" has gone for £500!!!
  23. Oh dear! after no date 20p and rare "new pence" 2p someone has now liisted another"1930s penny marked 1933" except that instead of a clever (and quite desirable) fake he's illustrated a 1930 penny
  24. Wow! £1,510.99 - way out of my league
  25. I think this is 19thC Moroccan cast falus
