  1. Thanks Accumulator ~ that is something I will really look forward to listening to Although I wonder if they meant the half crown, as the Crown was not a circulating coin in February 1971.
  2. ....and me. I'm currently forming a collection, and the apparent lack of stable pricing is quite a worry. Although I'm collecting for interest rather than speculation, it would be a bit irritating to say the least, to have paid tip top prices now, only to find they fall back later. Although you have to look for bargains, we're all lucky with some coins, and not so lucky with others.
  3. As good an argument as any for always getting the highest grade possible of any coin.
  4. I don't trust them entirely either, certainly not over such a protracted timescale. Not sure we're really comparing like with like, but a very low value coin whicever way you look at it. Interesting point.
  5. so how much is it worth ? my son likes it and thinking of collecting coins haha Funnily enough, it's worth £2! An excellent way for your son to start a collection though. haha lovely i thought it was at least 7 pound from what i have read thanks for info everyone I thought at first it might be quite a rare issue, but it's actually quite common and easy to come by in change. Not sure what the actual mintage is yet, though. I don't think that the 2009 £2 coins (both Darwin and technology types) were actually issued until last year.
  6. Beautiful coin & using the conversion chart kindly supplied by Geoff, I'd say that it was worth the equivalent of about 2p in today's money ~ employing the RPI.
  7. I'd say from the pic it was about GEF ~ for reference I paid a flat £50 a year ago for a choice BU one.
  8. Somebody got burned! Ooouch! I sent him a question too - "is the coin in the picture the one on offer"? Predictably I got no reply, Only 94.1% positive feedback I noticed. Not a good spec.
  9. He's actually a friend of Michael Goubys. So i would assume he knows exactly what he has, i spoke to him a few times about some of his coins, he's basically selling his doubles of what he has from upgrades. His name is Ian Fall His username of alfnail being an anagram of his real name. I've actually bought from him myself, and was very pleased with the item
  10. Isn't F106 without the H, which leaves only F108? Yep, you're right. I got carried away with the examination details. As you say, it only leaves F108, F106 not being possible with an H.
  11. I definitely think obv 11, but am slightly undecided on the reverse. Although the date position in the exergue is indeed slightly lower, as suggested for rev M, the drapery of Britannia's clothing parallel with the shield, seems too detailed for that reverse, and although the shield appears flat, it doesn't appear to be heraldically coloured. So is it rev J ? ~ I can't tell properly from the pic, but the topmost part of the plume should be 1.1mm from the point on the linear circle nearest to it. Not sure about the reverse, but if it is rev J, it could be a F106, with a rarity factor of 14 (251 to 500 known specimens). If rev M, then it's a commoner F108 R5.
  12. I bought a BU 1931 shilling from Richard a couple of years back, at an absolute bargain price. Very pleasant and considerate guy to deal with.
  13. Seems to be a refuge for the exceedingly banal most of the time. I joined it to see what colleagues were saying about whom, in their spare time. I figured if I was there and showing my face regularly, they couldn't say too much about me
  14. I really can't understand the apparent increase at all. London coins are massively overpriced IMO.
  15. Its better around the Perthshire area, Pitlochry, Tummel Valley (my brother has a static caravan there)Kenmore where i went camping as a kid and remember going for a swim in the River at 6am, it was so calm and great weather we loved it as kids, getting a little commercial now, but still have fond memories of Kenmore and i go back whenever i use my brothers van as it's only about 10-15 miles from Tummel along the wwinding roads. Then there's Blair Atholl, my great uncle worked there and the Duke of Atholl is the only other person in the UK with his own private army other than the Queen Yep, I saw that on the Antiques Roadshow last Sunday. Don't know if you or anybody else has been watching the superb "Great Railway Journeys" series 2, with Michael Portillo, but he's covering parts of Scotland in the last week of the series, as follows:-
  16. I was re-reading through this thread and remembered that you had said that 1949. I don't know if you collect Commemorative 50p Coins as well as Commemorative £2 Coins, or if you have managed to obtain one since you posted your reply, but I have a spare 1992 'Single Market' 50p Coin if it is of any use to you? Thanks for the offer, Rob, which I very much appreciate. But I'm not a 50p man. Looks as though Scott is interested though
  17. I think what they mean, Dave, is "finest known by them" That leaves room for something finer, hence the 90.
  18. I note he's had 13 offers, ranging all the way down to 20p, probably Something looks vaguely wrong with that coin. I'm sure it's not, but I don't like it all the same. are you thinking the same as me??? something definitely doesn't ring true. i have seen chinese copies being offered for sale on american ebay....... Oh, I'm sure we're thinking along exactly the same lines, cartwheel.

  21. It's odd really as I have managed to obtain coins from around 10 years ago which are practically UNC, but then I have also seen coins that are a year or two old that look as if they were minted in the 1940's lol I do not always collect or keep all of the coins that I obtain from my change, only usually the very best examples, but as I receive a BU set each year as a Christmas Present, I have no real need for them. I just find it a fun thing to do. Your experience is exactly the same as mine, Rob. Not only UNC ones from 10 years ago, but maybe a 2p from the early 90's still with lustre etc. But as you also say, the odd much more recent coin with what looks like amazing wear. I think I may have mentioned in another thread a 2008 £1 coin (new design) which looked literally as though it had got 40+ years of wear. It wasn't a fake, I'm sure of that, but it was like looking through some sort of time warp, as though it were 2050 or such. It even passed through my mind that it might have been artifically worn down (deliberately) for some reason.
  22. Although this isn't my area of interest or expertise, I must say I have found this a fascinating thread to read through. Thanks for all the technical and other info, chaps.
  23. If anybody's interested, there's a near perfect condition Freeman up for grabs right here
  24. A Coin Shop that I used to visit until it recently closed used to do a similar thing David. The owner used to pull out a bag of £2 Coins and asked if there were any that I needed and if there were, I was given them in my change. I thought that it was actually quite a good idea. lol It's a neat move which makes the thought of a visit to the shop a bit more tempting, and it's also a welcoming gesture.
