POLISHED COINS1949threepence replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Even the sharpest get stung there occasionally. The most successful strikes on e bay fall into two camps, in my experience:- a) Nice coins with a high initial bid price, which nevertheless is still nowhere near their true value. Would be bidders are strangely put off by the high start price, and often by-pass it completely, leaving someone else to make the only punt at the original price, thus bagging a real bargain. b ) Really high end coins which would be better off in a proper auction. They will sell, for sure, but usually end up at between 55% to 75% of what they could potentially realise elsewhere. It's a real mistake for high quality expensive coins to be put on e bay. Gambling strikes which may or may not pay off, are on those with poor photography, where the coin cannot properly be seen. This often puts buyers off, leaving the speculator room for a potential killing, or to get their fingers burned. I'd agree with this analysis apart from the one factor you missed out - certain key dates that somehow seem to do far better on eBay than elsewhere, I'm thinking of things like 1903 and 1905 halfcrowns. I've not noticed that, but then again, I haven't been looking at halfcrowns ~ or indeed anything other than pennies (obsessively ) for some considerable time. I'll have to start looking outwards a bit

1902 Florin Good Value1949threepence replied to choolie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries he took a real beating here a few days ago Oh, missed that. What was it all about ?

1902 Florin Good Value1949threepence replied to choolie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Yes, I've bought one coin from Michael, and I was very pleased with it, as well as the excellent service and attention to detail he provided. I'd also recommend Colin Cooke (Neil Paisley runs the concern now) Their prices are very reasonable. Also a guy called Richard Groves who is based in Scotland. He sold me a fantastic BU shilling for an absolute bargain price about 3 years back. Not to mention, of course, the excellent dealers on this site !!! Indeed, our very own Red Riley (Derek) of Penny Crown Coins has a 1902 GEF florin for £70 ~ reduced from £80 here

1902 Florin Good Value1949threepence replied to choolie's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Are you talking about Rendel Ingram ski? His grading is terrible in my opinion, i bought 2 coins from him but won't be back after what he sent. 1st coin in the post i can't see cleaning being evident 3rd coin has a scratch on the OBV, but as most would say, its your money and your choice. It's Michael & Rendel Ingram ~ Father & Son partnership. Sorry to say they both really pissed me off a few months ago when I was trying to buy a coin off their site. Won't be dealing with them again.

He really upset Herman Van Rompuy with some (to be fair, quite nasty) disparaging personal comments a year or two back IIRC. Not sure I like Farage as a person, but I've no doubt he'd shake things up. Shame UKIP haven't a hope of ever getting anywhere other than in Euro elections. Moreover, I don't think the electorate would take to him ~ he doesn't have the personality nor is he good looking. Those superficial qualities, like it or not, are ultra important components of electability these days. More importantly, people who make below the belt personal comments about others, are quite rightly, judged as unpleasant and arrogant characters. As an indication of how unpopular he might be, when he stood against John Bercow in Buckingham at the 2010 election, he only managed 3rd place. As for Ed Miliband, yes, he does come across as a bit smarmy. But I'll reserve judgement on his capabilities.

Anybody want it?1949threepence replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Hmmm, it doesn't look tooled as far as I can see. Looks like a typical, about fine, 1905. But I can't think of any other reason for John saying what he has

POIDH Pidh? i mean't cleaning You'll be too young to remember "Allo Allo". It was set in wartime France but featured the French, the Germans, and the English. As everyone spoke English (it was a British sitcom) they had to convey everything via accent. So the Brits spoke "Jolly good wheeze, top hole!", the French with French accents and the Germans with German accents. The stroke of genius was when a British undercover agent was introduced who played a gendarme but whose French was very bad. How to get round that one? Stroke of genius! They got him to play the part in English with a French accent, but to set him apart from the "true" French all his vowel sounds were wrong. So every episode he would come in and say "Good moaning". Hence the big giggle at your "froning" On a serious note, PLEASE don't take too much notice of Spink catalogue values. They're really just a guide. If you go to a coin fair you would get a more realistic idea of real values of coins. You would also be surprised at what you could pick up cheap from dealers loose trays, e.g. the £1 tray, or £5 tray, or whatever. And also remember that whatever you see a coin SOLD for, a dealer would pay you half that (if it's typical non-rare fairly modern stuff). "It is I, Le Clerc" Listen carefully, I shall say this only once. I totally agree about book prices and selling prices. If you look at book prices, you can take at least 50% off that when you sell to a dealer. Plus the fact they might try and knock you down on grade. They have to make their profits on stock, which might, once bought from you, be sitting on their shelves unshifted, for months, if not years, depending on demand.

That's weird. I genuinely thought she was Jeremy Clarkson's daughter. Didn't she also try her hand as a pop singer??? What was her name again? If she were, that would be enough to put me off her immediately.

I think he was deliberately playing the village idiot at his tax trial. But he was never going to be picked as England manager after that anyway. And when you compare the record of Harry with Hodgie, there's no comparison. What did Harry ever win, apart from one FA Cup? Agreed. Roy has a proven track record of success, even if not the most charismatic guy in the world.

POLISHED COINS1949threepence replied to numismatist's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Can't abide the look of polished coins. I'm of the old school of thought that polishing a coin, even more than cleaning it with a brillo pad, totally annihilates the coin.

1663 Shilling - Opinions please?1949threepence replied to Paulus's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries Grade looks to be about GF/NVF. Value is supposedly around £110 for a fine, and £400 for Very fine (although I'm no expert on this era). So £215, to me anyway, looks fairly reasonable.

I subscribe to the view that any law which falls short of popular consent, as in the case of this tripe, should be ignored.

Blocked ebay bidders1949threepence replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries The big problem for me is with lower value International sales, where the minimum that the Royal Money Machine charge for tracked is now £8. who in their right mind would pay that for a £2-£4 coin? Ebay is my way of shifting dross that is not good enough for my site or coins that need a worldwide audience to achieve the best results. In relation to blocked bidders, yes, they do know they are blocked when they attempt to bid. I have blocked countries on my listings and nobody in those countries can bid on my items now (unless they email me and I add them to a pre-approved bidders list). Those countries are Spain, Italy, Romania, CHINA, India, Ukraine and Russia. Todays pain in the posterior was a Russian gentleman who won a halfpenny token for less than £3, his total with airmail was about £4.40. I was messaged by him last month "me not got my item when you post?" I gave him the date of dispatch (from the ebay site) and told him to open a dispute and I would refund him immediately. Todays message; I will be forced to leave negative feedback..( Is opening a dispute such an arduous task? That is the only way ebay can keep tabs on scammers and how I manged to get the last one kicked off the site. I had another "lady" of Eastern European nationality now residing in Belgium rape me for a £22 Netherlands 10 Cent. She is an ebay seller and will only sell with registered postage as an option. She has obviously been the subject of claims but is more than happy to rip somebody else off? I'm surprised Spain and Italy are on your list of blocked countries, John. I would have thought they might be OK. The rest I can understand though.

Blocked ebay bidders1949threepence replied to argentumandcoins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries I don't blame you at all. That said, as a buyer, I have had recorded delivery items just shoved through the letter box, with all the tabs still intact, and even after several days, the Royal Mail website still showing the item at Plymouth Post office, or wherever. If I had been dishonest I could have claimed non delivery. Some sellers don't offer special next day delivery insured post, and you have to ask. Interestingly enough, the 1881 I've just bought was only offered as £1.50 recorded delivery, but sent special delivery. Saved about £4.00 there.

Well it just goes to show1949threepence replied to azda's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries e***n should be getting an email in a couple of day saying how the purchaser has been messing about and how would you like it for your top bid. Very probably. Just as a matter of interest, would the details on the relevant e bay page change if that were the case ? If so, it might be worth keeping an eye on it.
