  1. It does appear a lovely penny, but closer inspection shows it's not the strongest strike - the folds across Britannia's lap, and Victoria's hair especially below the wreath. Weak strike, but very attractive, nonetheless. Probably worth it.
  2. A 1932 florin in high grade ~ now there's something to aim for. Absolutely. I'm not sure what happened to that florin. I thought I'd kept it, but I can't find it now, 20 years on. Boring ? I love the £2.00 coin !!! (in fact I ought to start an appreciation society)
  3. Welcome to the forum, Sion .....Peck ~ I never realised you could speak Welsh...
  4. I remember near the end, around 1991 or so I was sent to the shop with a George V Florin to purchase a bottle of milk (despite my protests that I didn't actually want to spend this), my mother won the argument and it was spent. It was receiving a GEF 1951 florin in my change in August 1990, that sparked my interest in coins.
  5. Gotta be honest Declan, and say that I would purchase his. Aesthetically yours is the more attractive looking, but as you say, the strike is horrendously weak, and it makes a mockery of Britanna's face. Conversely there is considerably more detail on his.
  6. I'm not sure quite what's going on there to warrant such high bidding, but it looks an absurd amount to pay for a beaded border 1860. You could probably get an 1869 in the same state for a similar amount. The fact that it has come down in price, and there are very high bids long before the end of the auction, suggests something is amiss. Just scroll down a short distance to find this superb toothed 1860 for £220 or best offer.
  7. The rich choccie eclair please 1949 You'll need that coat : 'twas -14ºC in these yerr parts yesterday evening It's yours, Peck & yes, we are on course for the coldest December since 1890. Currently -0.58C average. Previously in the modern era, 1981 was the next coldest at +0.3C. Allegedly, December 1890 had an average of -0.8C.
  8. He's certainly had one dissatisfied German buyer, who'd obviously bought a coin described as UNC but less so in hand However, he says he's UK based ~ Greater Manchester. The "Adolf" comment may or may not mean he's German, but it's certainly very unpleasant. Difficult to retaliate without ramping up the problem to the buyer's own detriment. I'd love one of those to be for real. Sincerely hope your gamble has paid off on this occasion, Dave. Realistically, I wouldn't hold my breath, but good luck !!!
  9. Maybe, but there's no reason why you can't get an apparently later date struck over an earlier one. The automatic assumption that the die has been reused from an earlier year need not necessarily apply. If the wrong punch has been used when the die was being made you can get any underlying figure, and it doesn't have to be a number either Oh sure, I accept the general principle of an earlier date punched over a later date, but it's just I've never heard of such a coin as the one described, nor is it in any way apparent from the photo.
  10. Actually it had ended by the time I got round to messaging him, but by none of us doing so we are our own worst enemies. If everybody messaged sellers mis-describing their coins, then its incidence, although unlikely to be totally eliminated, would at least dramatically reduce. Yes there are many instances of it on e-bay, but that doesn't make it right. I know it's a bit heavy for something as minor as this, but to quote Edmund Burke; 'All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing'. Q.E.D. He withdrew it, but the other crowns are still for sale, and still described as £5.00 coins (see his other items)
  11. Described as 1868/9, It's a "type" I've never encountered before !!! Take a look He's 'avin a larf, surely.....
  12. Agreed! but also the whole area beneath the lighthouse is also weak, the appears to be no L in LCW My Freeman 6 is in lousy condition but a much better strike also is it my imagination, or is a there slight difference in the position of Britannia's thumb relative to St Georges cross?? David The thumb does look vaguely different. Although whether it's because all the other fingers are worn to a flat indistinguishable from each other, blur, I don't know.
  13. must have been happy then! Well here's my theory. I reckon that classic british coins is actually shill bidding as he knows people with deep pockets, hence the fact all his auctions are now private, why else would a coin with a value of only 850 be now at double book price, it makes no sense and isn't an ultra rare coin, just my theory anyway Yes Dave, you've confirmed my suspicions about this vendor. I had noticed. disclaimer ~ we may be wrong.
  14. errr, cream doughnuts or rich chocolate eclairs, anyone ? <- I'll get me coat.....
  15. Perhaps we should all deluge him with 'points of information'. Might be worth a go, Derek.
  16. I've got both Freeman and Gouby, but I still haven't got my head round all the penny dies for 1860 to 1862 David They are not too difficult when you see good pictures of EF coins, it's when all you have are worn specimens that are in the price range most of us can affordDavid That's the point I meant to add to my previous post, David. It's not that easy trying to classify worn specimens. By the way, Merry Christmas, all. Trust you've not overeaten or got too drunk !!!
  17. It'll be interesting to see if I get a reply. I've also sent him a "FYI" rather than a question. Usually I get a reply, so it will be interesting to see if that happens this time. Somewhat predictably, I've received no reply to my question.
  18. Well done Cartwheel. You did well managing to obtain all of the Commonwealth Games £2 Issues. They are were, and still are, very hard to find! In fact the first time that I saw one 'In Hand' was recently when I purchased a set of all four of them. lol They definitely are, Rob. I'm still on the lookout for a Northern Ireland flag specimen.
  19. Having now received three in the last few weeks, along with some technology 2009 £2 coins, it's become abundantly clear that they (Darwin's) are not rare at all.
  20. No worries, Mat. Pleased to be able to offer assistance, albeit probably rudimentary. It's quite a painstaking process, actually matching photos to Freeman coin types, and there's so many die pairings for 1860 & 61. Interesting nonetheless, and good experience.
  21. That is very true 1949. However according to this artice from the BBC, they may be more common than first thought. "The Royal Mint said that 87 million of the 29 special 50p coins would come into circulation over 2010 and 2011." Which means that there could be 3 Million of each Design released into circulation. Although, we do have to take into account that people may pull them out of circulation as and when they see them. And we can't forget the inevitable surge of them on E-Bay, so who knows? lol Thanks for the info and that very useful link, Rob.
  22. Talking about £1 coins, I received a 2008 one the other day, and I literally couldn't believe the amount of wear on it. It was like it had been in circulation for about 25 years !!! On the same subject, the relief on 1985 £1 coins must be very low. I'm getting one or two now, where the date has been totally rubbed off.
  23. That's a seriously large collection. Welcome to the forum
  24. I've sent the seller this question:- It'll be interesting to see if I get a reply.
