  1. Thanks. Sounds a useful way forward. I sort of do that now.
  2. I haven't encountered that. Is it possible to take a butchers?
  3. I do like the Sheldon system, but as for abandoning UNC, EF etc in the UK and Australia, that's not going to happen anytime soon.
  4. She's nearly 92, but on banknotes looks about half that age. Not sure whether this question has been asked before, but just wondered if anybody knew.
  5. Thanks for the heads up.
  6. No, that's a millipede
  7. link Interesting - another snippet of knowledge gained.
  8. Yes, I could see that was an F26 in one glance, as well - I must be improving on my 1861's !
  9. I was sceptical about the "fake news" supposedly emanating from Russia, but the more I see of Russia and Putin, the more I'm convinced that much covert hostility exists towards the West. Not that I believe their influence over the EU referendum and US elections amounted to very much. The kind of fake news stories circulating on Social Media at the time, were so obviously complete rubbish, that I'm pretty sure no-one with enough sense to vote would have fallen for them. Also, I can't abide cheats who mess with dope to try and win sporting events. Pleased they got banned. Just a pity they've got the world cup this year.
  10. No Jon, that's not reverse F. Reverse F has a distinctly rounded lighthouse top - that one hasn't. Looks like it could be obverse 4 though, which would make it an F22 IMO..
  11. I agree. In the absence of that, it would have only achieved a tiny fraction of the 5 figure sum, at auction. As you say "VIP" really only applies to those years where there is not general proof issue, and the term now often seems to be a bit of a con.
  12. The fingerprint is unfortunate, but unless you are sure of what to do, it's best to just leave it. My motto is no cleaning of coins unless absolutely safe to do so. Not sure whether acetone would remove it or not. Probably someone else would know. I've recently been advised that acetone removes old lacquering.
  13. The March LCA is postponed on account of the weather. Had this e mail earlier:-
  14. Almost unbelievable that people anticipate you falling for this crap.
  15. Thanks Jerry. Those were my thoughts as well, but just wanted confirmation.
  16. Any thoughts on whether this is an 1861 6 over 8, or not? link
  17. Don't know if that machine is on continuously, as opposed to just millisecond random snaps, but if so, she risks serious long term health problems as a result of radiation exposure.
  18. It would appear that a certification service began with ANACS in 1972, but that actual slabbing did not start until PCGS commenced operations in 1986, and NGC followed in 1987. So you were spot on Peck. link Here's an original holder:-
  19. Just noticed this. I never realised slabbing had been around that long. Always thought it was a very recent development - this century even. Well, you live and learn. Thanks Peck.
  20. Let me know if you have any issues and I'll walk you through the process.
  21. People were paying for "rolls" of 1967 pennies etc. Crazy when you think about it now.
  22. Using an inflation calculator that £140 in 1969 would be £2190 today. The 1953 plastic sets you could probably get for the prices asked then, in absolute terms today. After inflation £14 in 1969 would be £219 !!! Late 60's coin boom. I suppose the other factor which pushed up prices was sheer availability. No internet then, which made collecting more difficult.
  23. Definitely Freeman 73 and Gouby j. Gouby ja is a variant of Freeman 72 and doesn't have an H under the date. With apologies for the quoting issues. Not sure what's gone wrong.
