Like Jerry, the 1863 die No 2 under date is unfortunately out of my league, and the die No 4 is little more than a washer (albeit a very rare washer). I want a F38, but not a counterstamped one. Nothing much else there of massive interest, although I've made a note of one or two of mid interest in case they don't go at main auction.

Just been looking through the collections on Colin Cooke's site, LCA and elsewhere. I couldn't see a single 1919H with more than a modicum of hair detail. Even on practically BU specimens. The dies Heatons used must have been very worn. Same applies to 1918H.

They are indeed. I note Lee Brownson has got one on offer for well over £1k at Colin Cooke. a/UNC, but to be honest, not that marvellous. Nonetheless exceptionally rare in that condition.

After 8 plus years, i think I've gone as far as I can, for the time being, on the 1860 to 1901 series of pennies. I still have some very obvious gaps, but the rarer pieces are very difficult to come by, so my acquisitions from this series have slowed to a trickle. As a result I've branched out to the pennies of George V. Most of these are relatively easy to obtain in UNC at much lower prices than the bun series, but there are some rare ones, or at any rate, rare in high grade. The KN's are among the few in that era which have an exceptionally steep price/grade differential. I'm therefore very pleased to have obtained this 1918KN, which, unusually for any pennies of that WW1 era, has an exceptionally good strike, with very good hair detail on the King's head. There is a tiny metal flaw between Britannia's arm and the trident, and the tiniest blemish to the right of the trident, neither of which detract. But that apart it's issue free and has noticeable residual lustre and nice even toning.

They're the type of rubbish you'd put in your decoy cabinet in plain sight for housebreaking villains. While your serious one is hidden away.

Yes, but if they're old coins, it does make you kind of wonder where they were kept for the previous nearly 100 odd years, if just a further nine in a mahogany cabinet can accelerate toning to the extent that it has.

My Nicholls is a Mascle........ I can honestly say that none of my pennies have been adversely affected. The toning (if toning it can be called) is confined to my shilling collection for dates between 1914 and 1919. None of the 1920 and after specimens have been toned - one or two had already toned slightly when I had them, and they've not changed. But the 1919 shilling I had has toned considerably. I think I posted the image on here when I first got it in 2009. So I'll try and find that and post a current picture for comparison.

It does make sense Pete. I edited my post because I realised it didn't make logical sense in its earlier form. Some of my pre 1920 one's have toned quite spectacularly even since I've had them. It has to be something to do with storage, although what I'm doing wrong I don't know, as they're in a Peter Nichols cabinet in a dry warm room. It's the upward facing reverses that have received the toning. I say some, as others are 100% unaffected. Indeed, all the Edward VII ones are unaffected.

The colour just doesn't look right, Pete. It's more like a bronze or copper coin.

Link - here Image below Reasonable strike as far as I can see, but not good enough picture to supply a more definitive judgement, IMO. Especially in terms of the reverse. Also an odd colour which surely cannot be solely down to toning. More likely the photography.

The best shilling I have is the 1905 I won at Spink in April, 2017 - NEF and totally issue free.

She gave me the coin today (cost £5 not £10 so got a fiver back). Whilst I was very pleased to receive the coin, I was a bit disappointed as the die it was struck from, was obviously very worn. Much of the lettering is unreadable, having been almost entirely worn away. Oh well......

Very nice - and 1924 is a very difficult year to get in top grade. Even more difficult than the rarer 1925 IMO.

Not that I personally know of, but do keep an eye on London Coins Auction. They've had a few down the years. Indeed a very nice no issues specimen approaching VF, went for the bargain basement hammer price of £450 in March 2014. Of course, their December catalogue will be up in just...what.....2 to 3 weeks time.
