here are better pictures i have put them in the order i recieved them in. type 1 - T and Y closer to the edge, this from my observation, as the first type to become available (found it from around october/november 2008) i'm guessing the mint only made a limited run of these as they were replaced by type 2 type 2- after december these kept appearing, type 1's were not appearing in a full bright "fresh from bag" state showing those were no longer apearing new. the differance is that the T and Y are further from the edge

just noticed this today, thought i would ask around here what you think, look at the lighthouse

to start, (you started out similar to me.. except i found a 1954 shilling in a moneybox) do browse around, think about what you want to collect as there are many countries and denominations to collect. explore dealers, see what they have, if they have a bargain bin, have a look through, sometimes a few hidden foreign gems buy up books on the area you want, i suggest buying a book which covers a wider area at first then try and work out what you want. as for ebay buy bulk lots, usualy a few around, usualy cheaper then individual purchases, also try and buy 2-3 at once from the same person to cut down cost per coin Watch a few auctions, see whats going for what use your books: there are plenty of bargains out there (can get nice coins worth £30+ for around £10 if you are lucky) if you want forign, there are usualy cheap bulk lots on ebay to buy, some nice stuff in those.

none yet, i think they will pop up in second half of the year, still plucking out UNC 2008's so i'm guessing they havn't made any yet

i have had a look at at 1953 and 1955 to see if there was any sort of logical explanation (changes for 1955) but couldn't find anything. so far i have foind 2 with normal rims on ebay these past 2 days.

i'm guessing its investment, silver prices, gold prices AND copper prices, anything not desireable before is now more desirable for metal content value alone. i have heard the irish are buying up irish coins, americans are dipping into stuff, i prowl ebay looking for bargains, US coins... WAY out of the way (£5-6 for an 1880's cent? O.O) irish hard to get good stuff cheap, even russian coinsare hard, i'm guessing its the exchange rate and forign investers picking up a bargain when the £ is down (hell if i valued all the coins i got for hardly anything on holidays over the past few years i would be £30-40 up) i have still found bargains, today alone i have landed 1920 Australia penny (worth $6 austrialian) for £1.74, an 1886 with book price of around £10 for under 2... just won a few old russians (bought a few) which are probably worth a fair few quid) even the other week i got a coin worth £10-12 for the sum of under £3... dunno what exactly it is i'm guessing american and european interest, but even my dealer has gone mad on prices (£6 for some F-VF edward farthings?). its hard to say, some days everything is insane, other days it is cheap.

yea there seems to be a couple of variants in the location of the TWENTY on coin, on some the T and Y almost touch the edge on others they dont. have a look this is the version where the twenty is further from the edge the version where the T and Y are closer to edge, i found this early on in the run (late 08) and that particular one toned to a brown colour so look past the colour. throw that in with the old design the mule and the 1 versions you have a fair few 20ps to work out mintages for.

edit button gone.. just found someone selling a full run of farthings 1902-56 there is a 1954 in there, the rim looks exactly the same as the others

havn't looked into it fully, i got this in bulk and was interested in it as it stood out, i havn't got a lot of 1954 farthings for obvious reasons... no point, but if people go throught many farthings then it might have some light shed. http://www.myfarthings.co.uk/elizabethII1954.html good place to look, the rim on that one seems thinner

well there are proven differant rim thicknesses on elizabeth II in penny and halfpenny, but never seen a farthing before, i have pictures of both sides of the farthing which shows 2 differant rim thicknesses, i have a full date run of wren farthings and this 1954 is the only one with this rim, i have only seen it one other time (was another one on ebay few weeks ago) the reverse and obverse should be the same thickness. dunno if you can see the differance (was closer i think for one side...) but yea.. its differant, i'll try and get another picture of my 1956 (was blurred) which shows the differance, if need be.

not seen any scammers, but yea feedback is always a good spot, anything around 98-100 is a good sign, i have got the odd bargain myself (got a russian 2 kopecks worth £10 for £1.74, off a guy who doesnt usualy sell coins, and asked about it on a site where people collect russians and they see it as genuine) i try and avoid hard to see pictures people using one picture for many (ebay flodded with pennies atm with the same picture...) paying too much for things i'm not 100% sure on (looks good etc etc) if its cheap enough and you just want the example then sure, gamble away.

i dont mind slabbed coins, if its a rare piece in a good condition especially, or a general circulation coin still in a nice condition, but paying a premium for them they would have to be special, also konwing its authentic is a plus, its not anything and everything it should be stuff you as a collector feel should be slabbed, pieces i enjoy to look at i want to look at, but then you worry about handling, slabs prevent the damage. the prices on there are just plain rediculous though, £30 for a QE2 farthing? are they mad? UNC or not thats just plain nuts £4 for an UNC 1974 10p O.o 1903 closed 9 penny VG 10 £25? never heard of closed 9 before whats the differance?

i avoid "lucky dips" cos 9/10 its rubbish, if i dont see what i get i dont buy.. someone is buying a 1988 £1 for 99 +1.99 or something too O.o

yea i have seen that myself, very odd, there is a fair bit of rubbish that gets bids on ebay though

they are legal tender, people sometimes come into the dealer with some of these £2 coins (common ones) and tells em to go spend it. so yes they are, and so are £5 i believe, not seen any though.

well the minting figues for 08 are out too, cant wait to get hold of this i never see the book, and i really want a copy with the new coins in.

scrap that.. found some pictures, of each one, and the 7+G version, seems i cant find much on 1862 7+G halfpenny, most i have seen have no rocks.

bought a bulk of coins on ebay for about £3 (including postage) had about 30 coins in it so good value, i bought it on the gamble of a few coins that looked like they had been buried. anyway need soe help with values for 2 coins i got in here i cant work out with colectors coins GB 1860 penny (afair) FMAN 4 (the 1860 penny with the clear signiture under victoria) and this 1862 halfpenny - details, some damage from being in the ground, (if it didnt have the ground damage would be AVF) but basically, it has a small A next to the lighthouse (top point of the A points at the lighthouse) its hard to spot as the size of the A and the angle makes it almost look like rocks so its easy to miss. But there are no rocks on 1862 halfpennys to the left of the lighthouse, the main thing i have is i have seen the picture of the B and its upright not tilted 90 degrees clockwise. any idea of a value, (i'm saying its about the same as the VG 1862 B?) Sadly i dont have picture of it, but what is the rarity of these coins with die letters, and what should i do with it?

perhaps banks have em in the vaults. i have seen a few technology £2 coins, kept 2 back that have errors.
