  1. my dealer uses krause to mark up his foreign stock, which is odd considering i have found stuff for 10p that is worth more then that. and also rich pickings when it comes to russian stuff
  2. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VERY-RARE-JAMES-II-TIN-FARTHING-DATED-1687-/230694017905?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item35b66f5b71 tin farthing identified as 1687... even though there is no indentifiable detail? saw something realy dumb, saw an interesting coin listed at 19.99 no one bought it, now it is listed at 49.99 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320780375170?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320784751659?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2661
  3. cant make a coin thinner via alteration surly. it could be mint error if it is thicknexx rather then size, unless there are cuts, i have a couple of coins that are thinner, one side usualy looks more worn then it should.
  4. there are more 1879 narrows then that O.o just seena BB penny in fair for £50 start.. srsly? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1860-Beaded-Border-Penny-Fr-1-C-R15-Freeman-7-/130594104049?pt=UK_Coins_BritishMilled_RL&hash=item1e6803e2f1 my example cost me £12 and is better
  5. idont mind slabs, they protect the coin, the only issue i have is they add insane ammouns to the cost of buying coins.
  6. i love that design would have to be some gold nobles, or newark siege shillings for me
  7. i have a bright coloured 1893, those usualy end up black. so yea. £2. for a bunch of coins that included that very nice 1912? speaking of possible KN
  8. i would quite happily take it, if it is on ebay for 99p
  9. these ones is fairly recent, went through the 10p stuff, looking to expand a few dates in my french collection, as most coins from france can be picked up from 1860's in there. was told on another site to look out for a particular date, namely 1958 for 100 francs, (although it is a variety that is worth a fortune for that) but couldn't remember the demonination for this date, found a 1958 50 franc in there, i didnt have the date, so i decided to get it i couldn't research it there. so i went off not having the date for a few denominations for that year and picked up a 10 franc as well (not rare).got home, and as always with my 10p's' i research them, (usualy come home with at least 1 or 2 better grade coins worth a couple of quid, still do), and always have focus on a few countrys when dipping in there. these are a few of the better finds from in there. cant modify the date so it isn't fake (no 1948's) to buy one of these in this grade is £100-120 i got it for 10p - mintage is 500k so acctually high for a coin worth so much. i do also add to german coins, found this, as a nice example of its type. did some research 1902 J 10 pfennig is 815k mintage and as a result wirth £30-40 in this grade i have found plenty of bargains on ebay, and in bulk buys but these are just 2 of my fave finds. and baregain finds a great motivation to do such things as researching, and planning on what i want knowledge is power (and profit)
  10. i got a good few from the early days. having, not dipped into hammered and the shop recently moving due the the centre it was in closing, it so happened that i found it years later when my dad whent into the camera shop in there, so i looked in the window and saw. for £2. i never did follow up much on hammered but to find something so old, for only £2 i think is amazing. and a couple more. stories about research and such like. few years ago i went back to my dealers, having a look at the 10 and 25p stuff (as i do) with my low bughet and saw an 1858 farthing for £7 now having seen this design and wanting it for many years i thought it was a fantastic idea to buy this as it had good details and wasn't just a battered knackered one. at this point i knew nothing of varietys or even cared much. 2 years ago, i did some research on it (had other stuff to consentrate on in the time so coins were put on hold) after picking it up again, and was amazed by the fact i had not picked up a nice VF 1858 farthing. but a VF 1858 SMALL DATE Farthing. although it is vastly undervalued due to very little listings and being discovered post peck. i have a better picture but dont have the time to look for it.
  11. looks fine to me, going off the obvious tone.
  12. didn't the french go a bit crazy in 1790's (it was before 1800 they decimalised) and go to extreme lengths as decimalise the calender. sod the americans, they cant even spell metre correctly let alone use them. speaking of americans, they may use 100 to 1 doller, but they have had such crazy demoinations as 3 cents and 1/2 cents at some points. and if you delve deaper into the predecimal era, everything still fit within one anotheryou could make any price
  13. that is simple, grade this and i have hammered coins in worse then that, but still, i would love that one.
  14. he is missing the owl 5 roubles as well
  15. americans love their coins to much. and also with american coins, they mint far more due to larger population so the general % chance of getting that coin out of the entire series is lower then say our lower mintage
  16. i'm sure the serious collectors look on ebay sometimes, i personnaly havn't looked on ebay for a few months, as the higher quality stuff on there does up a fair bit to more then book price. (nice geo V pennies), there are a few varietys that slip under the radar on ebay often, (1879 narrow date for a few quid, same with LT 1897 penny that i have found), my main focus is my dealer, the prices on a few the contents of boxes (older farthings have gone up) but still plenty of nice things. i dont like upper end tbh, i like the history and a nice look, sometimes UNC cant give that nice been spent a bit colour. i may again focus again on bulk buys, the rules of these on ebay are the same as in auction house, if you spot something you go for it, especially on ebay where you cant investigate properly, the right price is key. bulk lots never ever sell at the value of the coins. i would also put the higher prices on such things as halfcrowns on the metal markets as well.
  17. micro varietys seems odd how you get the 1908 and 1909 rare pennys when you get similar small differances unlisted in other dates. and i want that pattern groat omg O.O
  18. that is something unique to 1985, it seems the legend on every 1985 is slightly thinner and lower relief as for 1988, the 2008 old style £1 is rarer then the 1988
  19. nope but a great looking 1908
  20. the grade should not matter with this, estimated to be around 1000 in existance so. i have the problem with my 1888 groat i got in a bulk buy.. someone put a hole in it
  21. that farthing variety has proved illusive for me o nd by bargain bin i mean a bunch of misc coins at a set price in which these gems are hidden, we need a thread for those to see what treasures were unearthed from the junk who can read a date? not many people as i got this rarity off ebay last year for a couple of quid (with another nromal worn 1879)
  22. yes it was, it was in a bag of farthings my dealer has, i got a nice 1912 wich has that slick black look too. found 1874H R over R and an EF 1861 for a quid each. we need a thread for bargain bin finds.. would be fun.
  23. 10p is cheaper then my UNC 1908 at 25p 1857 farthing with detached shamrock not seen an 1877 small date penny yet
  24. only ever seen 1 1968 halfpenny
