I really do not like modern coins, when you really get deep into the artistry and passion of collecting, you find that older coins have much more appeal than modern mass produced for the masses coinage.

This thing is probably the largest bronze weapon, whoops I mean monetary instrument, issued in Britain. Birmingham Clunker Thread Big coins are addicting, I have four that weigh several lbs each.

These pieces go up exponentially when the grades go higher, beater pieces with lots of dents and wear are not that much, but the BU examples are way out there now. I wisht I bought one years ago.

I saw one yesterday in my yard, while mowing. Moving the run-off pan for the rain downspout, and it was under there. A common American garter snake, non-poisonous, but still startling when not expected. I usually see at least one every time I cut the lawn, but usually along the perimeter of my yard, by the fence lines. Rather unusual in your part of the world to see on in the midst of your winter?

Good reference material, Seaby, or Coincraft are helpful with this, there are nuances in the lettering styles etc which determine which are said to determine under which monarch the coins were issued. But you must appreciate that there is much conjecture here, since these coins were minted 700-800 years ago, and so far they are silent on the matter, and record keeping from that time is rather skint. So often times it is a situation of best guess.

Please allow me to weigh in on the 1797 Tuppence, it was a large coin of course, as was the 1 oz penny from 1797. Whilst they were a shortlived issue in the sense of having only been minted one year, they made a dramatic contribution to coin circulation because of their rather substantial mintages. In fact, I have read of survey accounts from Northern England in the 1840's whence the 1797 issue pennies and tuppence were still circulating in considerable proportion to the then circulating coinages. One of the more macabre usages of the 1797 pennies was that they were said to be often used in burials to cover the eyes of the deceased so that the eyes would not open again during the funeral. So seemingly many of them are distributed in the burial yards across Britain.

My father brought back a large bag of coins from Asia and Australia when he returned. I count an Aussie Sixpence from 1942 as one of my first coins in my collection. There is also a 1968 10 Dong from Viet-Nam that I know I have had for a long time.

No matter what you care to grade that 1839, it is an attractive piece with nice colouring.

I would have to dig out my Canada book, but I believe these things were issued as halfpenny tokens in Upper Canada(Ontario) right after Waterloo. In effect they were a necessity issue that also duly commemorated Wellington's victory.

I will not offer my commentary on Lockdales, other than to suggest I would recommend others before them.

Sweden manufactured the copper blanks for the Scottish Bawbee and Bodle coinages in the late 17th century also. Funny how Britain imported Swedish copper, then the USA imported copper blanks from Britain during the early 19th century, which accounts for the scarcity of USA cents during the War of 1812.
