I think I will miss Coincraft during my stay in London, but do plan on some other numismatic pursuits. Unfortunately the Phoenix have given me a rather less than desirous impression of said Coincraft. I do believe the BoE will be on my agenda though:)

Righto, very very nice stuff, I like the 1818 Crown and the 1820 Shilling particularly so.

I was interviewed by Fred MacCauley on Radio Scotland about Scottish banknotes in February 2003. Then I was quoted in in an article in the Sunday Post about same.

Not more than quite a few of my Aussie pennies came into being in Britain. Many of the African coins, ie Nigerian, West Africa, East Africa, South Africa, Rhodesian coins also originated in Britain.

I keep my wee farthings in Kointains capsules, these are made to fit around the coin, I am not sure if they are readily available in Europe though. You can place these in the flips that coins are normally stored in.

I only have one fake, one of the Scottish variety, it is an obvious fake. How many of these as a percentage of circulation are there?

Actually if memory serves correct, I paid under £15 whenever I purchased this coin. These are not to difficult to find in nice grades, they just never really circulated whence they stayed in Britain.

This half farthing is many things for me, it is my smallest denomination British coin, I do not have the 1/4 Farthing or the 1/3 Farthing, which were not legal for circulation in Britain, however this piece was authorised for use in Britain despite it's diminutive denomination. In practical senses it was basically useless as a denomination, and did not really see a circulation of merit. This piece is my earliest uncirculated British coin, the smallest denomination, and I like the significance of the small floral treatment on the reverse with the Scottish thistle, the English Rose, and the Irish shamrock. This is yet another example of a lovely coin purchased years ago, that I liberated out of my banks vaults for a very temporary reprieve home for photographing.

In Nicholas Holmes "Scottish Coins - A history of small Change in Scotland" he cites an 1857 study conducted in Birmingham, London, Manchester and Glasgow in which copper coinage was surveyed and counted. Nearly 25% of the pennies in circulation were the cartwheels of 1797. So nearly 60 years later Matthew Boultons wonders of the coin industrial age still had a viable impact on the British economy.

This is a lovely I borrowed from the bank vault the other day, I had purchased it whence I was a teenager, and apparently have stored it in the recesses of my collection and forgotten of it. It is a George I (1714-1727) Penny minted for the British North American colonies by William Wood under contract in 1723. It is diminutive in relation to its British counterpart, and despite it's denomination of One Penny, it is the size of a contemporary British Halfpenny, thusly it was not popularly received in New England and was rejected for common usage. This piece is approximately 75% copper, 24.7% Zinc, and .3% silver. This alloy was referred to as "Bath Metal" There were only three issues of coins authorised by the Crown for circulation in the American colonies, the Plantations tokens issued in 1688 in tin which were used in Virginia, these 1723 William Wood pieces, and the 1773 Virginia halfpenny. Any other coins used in North America circulated only on the necessity of the situation and were not circulating with sanction.

I am new here, know of Sylvester from another board. Anyway this looks like a good place for me, I have a general interests in many things numismatically British. I focus my interests on English 17th century tokens, and all Scottish except communion tokens. I have my 17th century tokens out of the pokey at the moment so I can photograph them and hopefully create a new page on them. I generally go for the more elusive nicer preserved specimens, and that is becoming quite difficult of late. So far my tokens are limited to round farthings and ha'pennies, but I hope to purchase a heart shaped ha'penny in any grade soon. I have a Scottish collection that runs from William I to William and Mary, though I have a pretender piece of James VIII. Aside from the above, in my other life I collect Russian, Ukrainians, and ancient Greeks.
