  1. Lets make this clear...The London Mint are tacky coin dealers and nothing to do with the Royal Mint.
  2. Why not get it from the library?
  3. I agree if I had one I would never sell it.
  4. I would like one but for £50 approx it has never been a priority coin.If I had one I would keep it (but the other 149 would buy some interesting pre decimal coins
  5. Agree 100% Rob. I simply had to make a choice, I couldn't afford to collect the coins that I was now hankering after, so I had to bite the bullet and put everything up for sale as the core of a business. Unless you are willing to sell high value choice items that you would as a collector keep, you will struggle to make a living. Those are the customers which have to be concentrated on. Collectors of low grade material will automatically migrate to ebay and overpay - but they are in the right place. Collectors of high grade material need to be weaned off ebay where the risk and cost of mistakes is high, and use lists, fairs, websites and any other means which offer the opportunity to examine the piece in question before a commitment to purchase is made. They might not get the bargain they automatically expect from ebay, but using knowledge and physically handling the coins before purchase will lead to a better understanding of what's available, what it costs and a greater level of overall satisfaction. For the vendor, that means repeat business which is the key to any form of business success. I use 2 dealers who don't provide pictures...however I trust their grading and I have never returned a coin.I still use all avenues to aquire coins including fairs, ebay and internet dealers who provide images.I have bid at auctions but have been blown away.It seems what I like is everyones taste. I will keep an open mind on every source.
  6. Ouch. I bought about half a dozen from Paul Wincott for around £2 apiece 10 years or so ago. I'm sure I might still have a spare one somewhere. I'd love to buy one from you, Mr Peckris! I could put ex-Paul Wincott in my database somewhere... My memory was good - it WAS PW and it WAS £2 apiece. Now, the question is... where are they? I will have a look sometime but don't hold your breath just yet! Hold on, didn't you say you just bought one? I did, yes, but you can always find a better UNC. The fact that it's taken me this long to get one indicates that I shouldn't turn down another. 2 come along at once, etc - often happens! Some coins are difficult but not reflected by Spink.I had been seeking a decent 1958 6d I now have 6d's back to the mid 30's in Unc.Another hard coin is the 1915 farthing...even the common one rarely appears in nice condition on Colin Cookes list...I've been tucking these away
  7. All in stock and they are winging their way to Suffolk...I must admit I was getting the DT's after not buying a coin for nearly 6 weeks Even Deano the postman was worried for me.
  8. I think you just have to bite the bullet and accept returns in all circumstances. May hurt your pride occasionally but should prevent negative feedback, and to be fair, most buyers are honest so shouldn't cause a disproportionate amount of hassle. i think in all honesty i had just come to the end of my trading, and wanted to pack it in, and this incident was the straw that broke the camels back. i was left with a lot of stock which i have since sold or given away.............just a collector these days and loving it. I had illusions of dealing but have now resorted to be a collector and doing the occasional deal...I've just bought 3 coins to sell on but this won't pay the mortgage....I find selling emotionally difficult
  9. As long as its freepost I will BIN for 20p
  10. There is not a 1802 copper coin. The condition of the coins is everything..post a few pictures of the better condition ones and we can take it from there. It is pointless listing key dates because if they are from circulation they will be worth diddly.
  11. You can search on Ebay for identical coins to give you a feel for their values. It would help if you put a few pictures up of the better coins. The 1802 if copper it isn't.
  12. Bob That is a beauty. Anything above GF is a good coin....I'm still regreting the VF for £128 but there again it is a date I would happily push the boat out for and get the best....a great investment.
  13. Although the mintage recorded for 1844 1/4d's was 430,000 I would suggest many of these were not actually dated 1844.It is the same with 1869 1d's. Both these coins are rare and availability does not reflect the mintages.
  14. There was a VF one that didn't get sold "yesterday" for £128(No bids)...it was better than mine but an inbetween grade. I was tempted but will hang out for something better. In hindsight I could sell mine for £100 and got that one for £128..too late now.
  15. Ebay throws up bargains (rarely now but it still happens). 20C farthings see Colincooke...Unc's cheap as chips compared to the bay. Old time dealers still have the edge on service, price and general ease....However I won't put you onto the good ones
  16. Done it 3 coins to order tomorrow.
  17. oh dear, that would be me then! Me too - there aren't many coins from the 1950s (1959 halfpenny, 1953 brass 3d and 6d, 1959 sixpence.. perhaps) that you can get that cheap. Pretty much all my proper purchases for the collection over the last few years have been funded by the fact that people hadn't woken up to the tricky '50s yet, so I could still snap up bargains and mark 'em up silly. I'm finding I can't do that now, so I'm having to bite the bullet on a few dates to get them their final upgrade. I just paid more than £8 for a BU 1958 sixpence off Lucido: I'd been waiting for a bargain on that one for about 4 years. Not going to happen now! There is a BU 1958 6d on a dealers list no picture but a good dealer for £2...it is a date I need to upgrade..I must have another look at the list as I haven't got the cheek for a £2 order.
  18. I hope everyone battles through this hard year...it is going to be difficult. I have to get permission to spend more than £50 on a coin although Mrs Peter trusts me. However happy new year to all on the forum.
  19. A sole bidder could get a 20p coin for £2.24 but other poor punters are being fiddled big time.I won't report him/her because these buyers deserve it and maybe they will learn a lesson. We've all bought Turkeys & not just for Xmas
  20. I've bought several coins from him(two best offer & the rest normal auction)His grading is good but recently has ramped up his prices...I always have a look though.
  21. Makes mental note to go thhrough my change and get all the 20p's dated one side and £2 coins with neckless on the bay ASAP.If I can make nearly 50x face on these I may well retire by 2012
  22. A fool and his money..... There have been hundreds of these cons....it is no worse than worthless 1950/60 coins being snapped up for £2 or £3
  23. I have a few slabbed farthings which I would like to break out...but have decided not to and have put a note in their space's and keep all slabs away from my trays.
  24. I wouldn't touch Krause on British / Irish coins.....it is about as accurate as a Labour budget.
