    coin help

Silver pennies were halved and quartered but during the reign of Edward 1 tiny round farthings were produced for the 1st time.

If its 13mm it won't be a groat....more likely an Edward 1 farthing
  3. Probably more hassle in selling them than they are worth ie transport / post costs etc. I started saving pre 1992 copper as these were worth more than face value....but now I've just bagged them up and put the £ into the Kids post office accounts. I've got sacks of predecimal coins & US cents in the loft.....I wish a charity would come round and take them away.
  4. Welcome to the forum You got burnt on Ebay...unless you are experienced I would't attempt to buy anything over £20. If you want to buy use trustworthy dealers and be prepared to bargain. All those glossy mint companies will rip you off...avoid (that includes the Royal Mint) These modern issues are seriuosly overpriced. You are playing a dangerous game regarding investment....buy a few books and read up on the subject. The 20p mules started off at £20/30 then after the press picked them up they reached £300 and now have dropped to £50/60. I expect them to drop further....they are not so rare. My tip for the future is Rolf Harris limited edition prints on canvas even I don't collect and pretend I'm investing.
  5. If money was no object I probably wouldn't collect.
  6. It's likely it has been smoothed on one side for Shove halfpenny...a popular board game from yesteryear....I have my grandfathers board with a tin of these halfpennies smooth on one side (although these are Victorian to George V.
  7. Fidei Defensor was added to the inscription on coins.... Can't we talk about our old copper nose Enry and all the naughty things he got up to.....and how he got his Hampton Court
  8. Yuk...Artificial toning has no place in my collection
  9. I'm not 100% but the reverse has a French Jetton look about it Circa 15/16C
  10. It is a good offer...I've sold scrap silver on Ebay but after fees'paypal etc...and the "unknown" factors!!!!!!! if you do go the Ebay route my advice is to split into 2 lots
  11. A nice coin but £80 is too much £40-£50 would be an OK buy
  12. Hi James There are several dates in early copper which are far rarer than catalogues indicate (and a few overvalued dates too) Quality is always better at holding its value so concentrate on buying the best. For investment buy well rounded, centred, quality silver hammered coins. They seem to be popular and always sell for a premium over book price whether on dealers lists, ebay, coin fairs or auction. Gold....can you guess where it is going next....history has shown it to peak and trough....where are we now?
  13. The minimal weight loss will not be lost on a bag of 50p's....only really a problem with gold. I have been banking loose copper change and as long as it reaches 359 to 360g no problem.
  14. Let me know of your (bargain rates)I would love to take Mrs Peter and friends away for a supprise weekend....next year its my big one (50) cough cough splutter but I still party as a 21 year old.
  15. Just checked out mine its a Martlet (quack).I got it on a whim....a type collector.I just went for a half decent bust which are like hens teeth. Not one for my selling pot at present. I will post a picture later as it could maybe raise a few £ to pursue farthings or a 50 inch TV.
  16. Best of luck in your new venture Chris.....you've got some nice stock. I would like a stretched Porsche Cayman (with 4 seats & room for a Springer). Are you hiring them out for special occasions until they sell?
  17. Hi Your 2d is in fact a 1d and in NF condition....value maybe £5 to £12. All 3 coins appear to have been cleaned...which lowers their values. Regards Peter
  18. I've been selling (and have loads more) H's & KN's ....they fetch pence in low grades....but hey they must be shifted (Mrs Peter's orders before I seek out a few farthing rarities and Pre 1100 hammered)
  19. Note the name of this web site and get these peskie coins outa here Ban post 1951 I say.
  20. Who did you buy it from? There are a few vendors on ebay currently selling casts but not advertising their status. 10% underweight is a likely weight for pewter (lead/tin alloy). Pure tin would be about 30% down, pure lead 20% over - both are ish numbers. I've noticed her auctions which people are falling for...I won't name and shame as Nigel wants his refund but if you see a George 11 shilling being described as a medieval hammered coin AVOID...some of the actual hammered are duping a lot of experienced Ebayers
  21. A battered Fine at best
  22. I agree, I also have the Edward VII 1902 crown with less toning and I think it looks a little bland in comparison. 1902 Crowns are quite rare....however crowns are not my first choice (they get a bit expensive before 1887)and between 1927-34....and a few varieties.Personally I prefer your 1902......but each to their own.
  23. i'm also selling about 40 1959 scottish shillings over the next few weeks (on ebay) nef to unc
  24. Ebay will give you a fortune on scrap silver much more than x 10 or x 20..its madness...start it off at 0.99 and reap
