Hello Bob, Yes, Michael has quick a good article on his website reagrding pennies, clearer in explanation than above and with some images, but the feature extends to Halfpennies, probably Farthings too The feature does not manifest itself in the same way on farthings due to the portrait size in relation to the flan. Die clashes are still sometimes visible, the 1840 2 prong being an excellent example (especially on the reverse), but the ribbon like feature does not occur as far as I am aware. and what a die clash that was....it took me 25 years to track that one....still I have a few on the radar.The beauty and frustration of a collector.

I've been on a lookout for an upgrade for some time without success; so i guess this ultrawide 1896 is rare, as is the wide date 1895, again mine being the only example I've seen I've noted the date widths vary.When I got my Freeman's I went through my pot of spares and found a R13 1879.(close date) The date spacings on the veiled heads I had noted but not pursued.Thanks for everyone's input

There's no year which is generally a weak strike, but there are years when dies got overused so that towards the end of their life they produced weak strikes. This happened especially from 1915 - 1919. Also, the Type 2 obverse (1920 - 1926) is much shallower cut to reduce reverse ghosting, and therefore might mistakenly be thought by the inexperienced as weak strikes. Those latter years, the portrait wears much faster, and if you put an EF example alongside a VF Type 1 obverse, you wouldn't see much difference especially in hair detail. But that's due to redesign, not weak strike. From 1926 ME onwards, there isn't any notable weak strike, though as I've said, any well-used die will produce worse results than early strikes. The General Strike was in 1926

You are a brave chap to collect these.Very few circulated.Someone like yourself could maybe do a write up. Chris Perkins the owner of this site is a bit of a wreath man.I think he has had a few 1934's through his books.I would suggest his advice.

I have been attracted to auctions because of low(ish) estimates but there is clearly a numpty on board.

If you collect farthings (I do) I can't resist some.When I compare a new purchase with an existing coin there are obvious differences. 18C copper....bah humbug I just keep the lot and rearrange my trays.

These were from a weekend in Essex, a day was on a charity rally, and the other two days were on a rally organised by a friend. I do have local land as well, and it is just a case of getting the landowners permission beforehand. Only finds that come under the treasure act are recordable, however I do record anything of interest with UKDFD which is a hobby sponsored datatbase which records/coins and artefacts. This was a very good weekend of finds, it is just great fun to be out in the fresh air, and it is a great buzz when you find something. Nice finds There is so much buried history out there.

Hi les occ, There are in fact 8 different varieties of 1900 penny, all based on the shape of the '9' in the date and the position of it's foot, coupled with the spacing/orientation of the '0's. There are also reports of two other types, one where the '9' is over a border tooth and the second where the designer's initials are missing from under the bust. Sorry to bring this post back, I find it important that other people contribute to the author’s finds. I did find 8 different date varieties of 1900 penny. The rarest in my sample was the date having 10 1/2 tooth spacing with an open and skinny 9. I was suprised to see this many variations since I did not find any date spacing differences for 1901 using a similar sample size! What happened? You Freeman and Gouby should be shot I don't need more varieties

There are very few sellers that I trust from grading.I wouldn't buy at an auction unless I could get good images of the coins.Bulk lots and the alarm bell rings.

Was actually wanting to see if you were an honest seller or not, and it seems not. Reason being is that i know you had several emails during this auction telling you that this coin was made of pewter, yet you've failed to tell me this so far and you also failed to update your auction stating this, and that can only be for one reason, you wanted it sold as original. There is a very good British coin forum which i'm a member of and your coin was pointed out on that forum, your wording in the auction does'nt really wash either as you've sold coins and sell a few coins and you certainly knew the date, but your WHAT IS IT quote was really quite amusing. So, what we can do is either you sell it as a pewter fake (as you know it is) and i can forget feedback, or you can try again selling as the real deal and i can leave a nice feedback.
