  1. Whereabouts are you? Perhaps one of the members could take a look for you.
  2. Welcome Yorky! Firstly, glad to see a detectorist and collector on this forum. This penny is indeed rare, in Fine it books in at around £330 and in VF around £1300. But let me state that these prices are only a guide, if you were to sell it you would most likely get slightly less. So yes, this is a rare coin and a nice example too! Kindest Regards, Clive.
  3. If you want Lighthouse coin capsules, check out my site, only £2.49 for 10, cheapest I can find on the net! http://historiccoinage.com/supplies.aspx These are great, every hammered coin I own is in a capsule, durable, lightweight and scratch resistant! Not to mention that they are harmless to your coins!
  4. On the outermost edge of the crown it looks like a cast-line, a rough surface left by the machine that makes hundreds a day. The face of George appears to lack detail and the coin appears "grainy" rather than a smooth surface that these coins normally have.
  5. Which country are you from?
  6. Wonder if they do teas...
  7. The award for the best coin photos goes to... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/EDWARD-1ST-HAMMERED-...id=p3286.c0.m14
  8. This is your coin but in much better condition, as you can see, the dates affect the values greatly on some coins. http://www.coinarchives.com/w/lotviewer.ph...79&Lot=2186
  9. The one with attractive patchy toning and little wear is worth more than yours. Just rinsing a coin under the tap does not count as cleaning, just make sure to dry the coin if it's copper etc... Cleaning is using chemicals or something like a coarse brush to get dirt off.
  10. Everyone knows that Edward II minted Groats... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Edward-II-Medi-Eval-...p3286.m14.l1318
  11. Wait 'til you see how they sell hammereds Chris! I've been campaigning against them for many months as they scam newbies to the hammered market.
  12. My thoughts are that someone, perhaps a schoolboy or a lover, put the initials of a partner or himself on the coin for the novelty factor. I have sold many cartwheel pennies which have had initials stamped onto them and found out that it was the initials of a market trader, it could have been some form of advertising for his clients. Either way this is definitely post-mint.
  13. The two letters on the obverse look like a standard countermark to me, i.e. someone's initials have been put on it after it left the mint.
  14. A jeton is a token or a counter, very common and found all over Europe.
  15. Have any pictures? As for your collection, it's up to you. You could sell it, keep it, continue collecting etc... Cheers, Clive.
  16. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...sid=p2759.l1259 Oh!! If it's stamped WRL then it must be genuine...
  17. Top right is an Angel/Half-angel weight and the one in the middle of the top row looks like a Noble/Ryal etc... weight, I'm interested in these and have several already. Most were shipped in from the low countries. Kindest Regards, Clive.
  18. You have a coin of Henry's Posthumous coinage, it looks like a halfgroat of tower mint. My guess is Spink 2410. Kindest Regards, Clive.
  19. I always find that quoting the price that they'll have to pay at the post office helps, usually £1.24 for 1st Recorded. Always makes them feel guilty!
  20. Welcome to the forum Gooner. Your coin is one of 10,535 issued and if in absolutely perfect condition, FDC, Spink suggests £750. Kindest Regards, Clive.
  21. Your question has been answered, saw your email before this post!
  22. If your unclipped coin is considerably less than 2.3 cm in diameter then you have yourself a halfgroat, I'd guess that yu've found a groat as they're more common. Cheers, Clive.
  23. I bought two coins from the States and the guy sent it to my PO Box too, but Parcel Force sent me a letter asking me to pick it up or arrange redelivery, not bad! Free redelivery too!! I mainly deal with people in the UK, but US, Australia, France, Belgium, Canada and Germany are frequent customers/sellers to me. I haven't had any major problems with international transactions apart from one to Saudi Arabia... As with Royal Mail, I have quite a few problems with them but I always get my compensation so it's not too bad. I agree with Richard, you can pick up some very rare coins from international sellers as they often cannot ID the coin exactly, it's usually only to a denomination and a monarch so I can pick up a bargain in regards to mint, class, moneyer etc... Cheers, Clive.
  24. According to the Royal Mint website they did: As for the £2, I'll have to look around for you. Kindest Regards, Clive.
