I'd put the top one as Edward I Class 3E by the crown and letter position. With trifoliate crown, I'd say the middle one is Edward I too, with well formed spearsI'd have said it was around Class 8 but- the legend appears to read ED R ANG... which belongs to the earlier Cass 1? All you can say about the third is that it "probably" is Edward III with Bifoliate crown. Mostly guesses! How about pictures of the reverses. It could be that the centre one is an "esterling" (contemporary continental copy)

I think there was no real seperation between the reigns, and any variation was both regional and gradual rather than "a new broom" approach. It's probable that the various classes were in use for a wide timeframe around the succession.

Yeh! But it wouldn't be the first time I've come across an Edward 'penny' measuring 11mm (especially on ebay)

I admit this is puzzling. Coincraft has the obverse legend at EDWAR R ANGL DNS HYB on the drawing but quotes EDWAR ANGL DNS HYB in the text. The broken lefthand spear on the crown, bifoliate crown, lettering and hairstyle makes me agree with Edward II class 11a. You don't specify size but as there are no halfpennies in the series from canterbury, it must be a penny!

kuhli. Have you come across over stamping of Spanish coins? I have a 5 pesetas of Amadeo that is over-stamped with a small crowned G.P. on the neck of the ruler. I don't think it is a collectors mark as it looks too 'official'.

The ebay problem wasn't! Someone hijacked my ebay account and as a result, ebay blocked me. All sorted out now, thank goodness. I only disabled my antivirus for a couple of days because of a program clash, but that's all it took. Be warned!!!!!!!!!!!

Spot on! I can only think of early collectors (hoarders?) who would be the source for pristine early coinage. Any that were in use must accrue a lot of dirt and grease over the succeeding years, even lots more dirt if found in the earth. Any clean ancients must therefore have been cleaned at sometime!

I think they must have been released in certain areas more than other. I've found only 2 in two years.

Nothign, realy. It just seems that they turn up a lot less than other dates. I don't know the mintage. Perhaps Chris knows?

With all the hassle I've had with Yahoo and ebay I'm thinking of only using dealers. So I'm casting about. Pity you don't sell hammered English or Celtic, Chris.

I agree with all of you! But I must point out that there are a lot of 'dealers' on ebay, many as 'power sellers' who will do anything to earn a buck. As always 'caveat emptor'. With chemical toning and fakes, unfortunately, lots of novices will be burned and there is not much any of us can do about it. I'll amend that statement! We cn "name & shame" them on this website and hope newcomers find us!
