  1. That's made it look like a drawing!
  2. It wasn't 'Buy now' and I think, as it was listed "Edward penny?" someone put him wise and he (sorry, she/it) has removed it and it may reappear with a higher start price!
  3. I do like my 'oddities' (hence my avatar)
  4. I'll let you know if I come across anything interesting in my trawl of the web. I had spotted an 'esterling' ( Contemporary copy of Edward silver) being touted as Ed III on ebay, but, for some unknown reason it disappeared from the site next time I looked. Just another of my interests and - no! - it wasn't out of time.
  5. Sylvester - It's possible that Geoffry, being a 'mere' count just used the currency available. Saves money! I would pick the Plantagenets. I had thought it a nice defined range within my reach, but, as I've said with respect to date saving, there is always a coin in your series that you just can't get!
  6. I agree. "is there no satisfying the man".
  7. I bought my first Cnut helmet penny in 1956 for £8 in VF. Perhaps the prices haven't moved as far as you think? I edited because I've just noticed I'd put my purchase at 1056. I'm not quite that old!
  8. I know I'm digressing here, but have you come across any coins of Geoffry V of France? He was the founder of the Plantagenet dynasty.
  9. Thanks! Sylvester. I think I'd already considered most of your points. The boundaries of kingdoms in that period were flexible, and names changed on a regular basis. Hence, Brense - Reghed - Cumbria - Northumbria, seems to be the progression of this neck of the woods. I just think that with every minor king producing his own coinage, at the time, there should have been some sign of coins from here! I don't think any ruler here would want to be left out!?! I suppose mis-attributed coins is the favourite answer.
  10. I have puzzled, for a long while, as to the lack of recognised Cumbrian or Reghed coins in the Saxon series. I am at present reading Sir Francis Palgrave's History of the Anglo-Saxons and find in the preface, describing the 'Witenagemot' of Edward the Confessor, a statement that the 'King of Cumbria' occupied one of the first echelon seats. It seems peculiar that such a powerful 'kingdom' never produced any coinage before that time. Has anyone any other thoughts on the matter?
  11. It's said "you have to be mad to be a numismatist". Looks like they're right!
  12. I go even further and am collecting cut halfpennies and farthings of the Plantagenets. Money has a lot to do with it! I'd really like to collect all the kings of Northumbria, but there's little chance of that.
  13. I do!!! When my wallet is empty, which happens more often these days!
  14. Grading of Hammered is not so much a science as a 'wet finger'! Try to grade some of Henry II 'Tealby' pennies and you'll see what I mean.
  15. It's not the dogs - it's the owners! Feckless most of them!
  16. Don't get hooked up on date runs. You are bound to come up against that astronomically priced date you MUST have. Suicide is the next step!
  17. One penny ( the other side)!
  18. £175 with 30 days to go for a VF penny catalogued (in 2004) at £40 seems strange - unless there are a lot of people out there with bags of Chrismas present money (or refunds)
  19. O.K.! Found it! Top of page 483 in my copy. The picture is small enough to be overlooked! Thanks folks! Still haven't seen any on ebay or other sites, though!
  20. My Spinks is 2004 issue and it does not appear, so that may explain it. Although I'm still puzzled that I have never seen one, even on ebay? Any idea for the omission from the 2004 Spinks?
  21. I've decided to put this subject in it's own Topic as I am seriously puzzled. They do not appear in Spinks and I haven't seen them mentioned anywhere else. Can anyone throw light on this? £2 Sovereign Anniversary obverse £2 Sovereign Anniversary reverse Sorry about the obverse, but Coincraft is not an easy book to manipulate on the scanner! By the way the reverse is type 5 not 4 as I originaly said.
  22. Yep! It's listed in Coincraft as being struck in gold, silver, tin and pewter as a Unite ( Page 687, C1PT-020) Incidentally, while looking up 'Broad' in this book I spotted a milled £2 of our present queen that I didn't know existed! It certainly not listed in Spinks. It's quoted as being with head 4 and reverse 3, "Anniversary of the gold sovereign". Anyone know of it ever appearing?
  23. That would be a bit difficult for me .... I'm a hammered collector!
  24. The only modern coins I collect are the £5's on a price for price basis. Any other must come from change
  25. No.1 No.2 No.3 Can anyone explain these, quoted as "in hand"?
