  1. Are they die fills or design change, Peter? I can never decide whether to include them or not...
  2. They've got a couple of Gothic Crowns too. Could we trust the cataloguer to spot a Shanghai Special?
  3. Ouch! And a nasty shock when they came to move it on. Do we think the other one (no sig) is just a standard 6+G F.39 too, then? Aye, i'm fairly sure both are normal and not varities. Certainly the 1862 they are saying had 1/2d numerals is a bog Standard 1862. well done stacks and their cataloguer who should be shot at dawn for thise 2 errors. God knows how he came to the conclusions he did ...and presumably Stacks have told the current owner that they've got something interesting, so some disappointment coming to them, too! Do tell us how it goes, Catherine!
  4. ahh to be 17 again...
  5. Ouch! And a nasty shock when they came to move it on. Do we think the other one (no sig) is just a standard 6+G F.39 too, then?
  6. Here's the 1862 small numerals, Peck: Stacks I used the Previous and Next Lot buttons to find the others
  7. Well I can't see any difference between my 1862 and either of those two. Except mine doesn't have verdigris! Penny experts a-plenty here...maybe I've got the rare halfpenny numerals with no LCW too! Browsing through some of the others, how come #1338, the 1822 Crown got AU-Details for surface hairlines, and the 1919KN got graded even though it's been run over by a train?
  8. What you really need is on Page 95!
  9. Happy National Get-your-shit-together Day, everyone!
  10. I'd start in 1967 and march your way back. Then you really can only buy top grade coins right from the start (which is what I'd do if I had the chance to start again, would have saved me about 5 years!), you can learn grading with coins costing a few quid, make a few mistakes, only costing you a couple of quid, and move up slowly. Then on to £10 coins as you progress through G6 and G5, learning what's easy and what's trickier, throw in as many varieties as your patience can bear, so by time you're thinking about spending £100 on a coin, you've had a few hundred through your hands and you will know what you're doing a bit by then.
  11. Don't even think of being a coinie without it...
  12. Ah yes! I remember walking up Wembley Way in about 1988 while they maintained the opening chords of Shine On for about half an hour while the stadium filled up. Quite a night...
  13. CoinCraft lists them too, Stuart. For instance, 1939 Proof English Shilling, £350 in 1999.
  14. Well, armed with Appendix III, I just did 1874 pennies - another area I'd been avoiding. Did them in five minutes flat. Hurrah!
  15. Well I feel pretty stupid in the cold light of morning; not only did I not find Appendix III of Freeman, I also realised that I spent most of yesterday afternoon trying to match Freeman Halfpennies to Peck Pennies. Dearie me....
  16. 15 cents! Flippin' 'eck you got a bargain there, Proof or no Proof.
  17. Well would you believe it! There it is. I've only had the book about 10 years! Thank you for that!
  18. Wouldn't that be great, Scott! Unfortunately neither Peck nor Freeman have good enough pictures to start counting lines on lighthouse lanterns. For that you'd need high grade coins, in hand. Which, of course, I don't have either!
  19. Progress update: Freeman Rev G (door on LH) = Peck Rev F (sea crosses linear circle) You'd think then, that : Freeman Rev F = Peck Rev E, but... Freeman F (four vertical lines for lantern) can't be the same as Peck E (lantern has rounded top but shows no vertical lines)
  20. I thought this would be a nice job for a lazy Boxing Day but it's turned into a bit of a headache. I'm trying to match up the Die classification for 1861 Halfpennies used by Freeman and Peck. I do have both books, so I didn't think it would be too hard. Trouble is, both authors seem to use completely different identifiers. I don't have enough of the actual coins to do it that way, so I'm having to go by their descriptions. This is as far as I have got: Freeman: Obv 3 - Obv 4 - Peck Obv 3 Obv 5 - Peck Obv 4 Obv 6 - Obv 7 - Peck Obv 5 Peck: Obv 2* - Freeman: Rev D - Rev E - Peck Rev C* Rev F - Rev G - Peck: Rev E - Rev F - I can't believe I'm the first person to ever try this. Has anyone got any further and can help me fill those blanks? Sorry to be so autistic, but it's a big messy area in my database!
  21. so does it have the same abrasions as Roy's 1864 examples? ah - just saw your edit!
  22. What shocked me is that it was reported that he didn't have a Facebook page, as if that was a clear indication of a dangerous sociopath. Unbelievable. Absolutely bonkers, and very worrying what constitutes normal! You can hear the deep intake of air in the court room when they announce he didn't EVEN have a Facebook identity! Well, that's it confirmed, he CAN'T be functional, the Police were quite right to speculate he may not be normal after all! I wasn't sure, until they told me! Here's the quote from the BBC website: "He apparently had no Facebook page and his electronic footprint was minimal." Bloody hell. My ONLY "electronic footprint" is as a coinie. I don't even have a Tesco clubcard. I'm practically a terrorist.
  23. What shocked me is that it was reported that he didn't have a Facebook page, as if that was a clear indication of a dangerous sociopath. Unbelievable.
  24. I'd expect to get £30 or so for an 1887 florin in EF+
  25. Got to see a picture, James - slab or no slab!
