  1. Hello Mal. How much is it to buy that CD? Looks like a very useful resource for what seems to be an understudied series...
  2. In at the deep end then, Sheencrofter!
  3. oh how exciting! then buy a bag of farthings and start again...
  4. I remember asking the same thing when they told me that they'd blown my endowment on the stock market! I do hope no-one thinks pensions will be any different. Here's an idea - don't give it to them to gamble with, buy coins!
  5. Very little moving up here in the deepest Cotswolds! oh dear... My daughter in law is working in the pub in the next village; double shifts today. I wouldn't let the Pwincess out in her little Peugeot roller-skate, so I took her this morning at 10 in the 4x4 - I was the first car to have made the journey - such fun driving on virgin snow! It's all uphill on the way there, which is easy, but downhill is much hairier. It was just starting to crunch at 6pm when I took her for the evening shift, and picking her up at midnight's going to be VERY slippy. It's all single cars width high hedge lanes. I was supposed to be putting edging strips round a lawn tomorrow, so if (when!) I have to cancel that, that'll be £200 of work I've lost this week to the flippin' weather. But the woods are beautiful, with all the heavy branches down over the road.
  6. To be a bit more specific on diameters & weights: Sov: 22mm, 8g Half Sov: 19mm, 4g
  7. Hi Waterbird Sovereigns and Half-sovereigns look identical to each other, so we'll need to know the diameter of your coin - a quick measure with a ruler will do. And we'll need to see a picture of it, of course...
  8. that's just who I had in mind, Debbie!
  9. I've already got your vote, thanks Stuart! As they say in Belfast..."Vote early, and vote often"
  10. That one looks more like nEF. And you know who "stampinvestor" is really, don't you? Roy "1864 florin" ...
  11. Yep, it gets an aUNC from me too Cracking coin. I've been happy with the seller too, in the past. I'd bid £25 or so on that 1926 ME. £41 so far.. That's over Spink's BU price! (2012)
  12. I need a loupe to even see the date on G-V farthings!
  13. Well that's 3 votes to two in favour of GVF. However, taking into consideration the stature of those voting VF, I declare a draw, and the next opinion holds the casting vote...who's it going to be?
  14. That's the one! Dies 8 + H Thumb barely extends beyond StA X Sea extends to but does not cross LC Narrow spaced date I'm learning!
  15. As blinking Amazon still don't accept blinking PayPal, andy_jack is knocking them out like little hot cakes on eBay for £5.50 with free postage. I did notice that someone else is selling them for £10.46 + £2.75 p/p !
  16. Would that be Freeman 80? Just testing myself...
  17. Be prepared to disappoint her, Greg! Don't even touch the commemorative stuff, just take a quick glance and leave it with her. You don't want it cluttering your place up, honestly.
  18. Good, thanks Peter - that makes me feel better - I only paid a fiver for it. GVF money would have made me feel guilty!
  19. Pretty sure, '49, that anything that had started already, could easily continue. They don't seal 'em in argon, it's just air in there as far as I know.
  20. Really? Now this is important. I've got it booked in as a VF, but even if I only bump it up to VF+ it becomes my most valuable coin. At VF it's only No. 18! Votes on grade would be very welcome!
  21. Canon A480 Powershot here. Why? Because John (Argentum) recommended it. That close up of the R/I/V was just with that camera and no extras bolted on, apart from a little tripod. As Peckris pointed out - light is everything.
  22. Yes! A halfcrown is a big half-ounce lump of silver - it'd stand out a mile amongst your others!
  23. Well it's all about condition, BB, and that picture I put up is more or less the minimum grade likely to appeal to any serious collector, even for a tricky date like 1864. I can't see anything in your pictures that comes close, I'm afraid! Best bet is to start making piles: There may be some expertise here on foreign or decimal stuff, but it's not me, so this is for British predecimal only: 1) Bronze 1937-1967 2) Nickel-brass threepences 1937-1967 3) Cupronickel (silver colour but not silver) 1947-1967 4) Bronze 1902-1936 5) Silver 1920-1946 6) Silver pre-1920 7) Bronze 1860-1901 I did notice a copper farthing in there, so... 8) Copper pre-1860 That's stage one. Stage two is fishing out some scarcer dates, if there are any.
