Germany were not issuing Ducats in 1963, and of the countries that were, for either currency or as bullion coins I cannot find any with Kennedy on them. Is it heavy like real gold? The fact that the legend is entirely in English/latin smells fishy to me. Could it be a privately issued American coin? Sorry I can't help further.

Phillip, That sounds very interesting...Let me go off on a complete 180 degree angle first. Is there a Nicola Greenhalgh in your family? She's about 29, very attractive and lives near Stockport somewhere. She's a friend of mine. Just wondered as you were also a 'Manchester' Greenhalgh. Anyway, I would imagine that would have been a very rare find and would be far more valuable now. Collecting the coins themselves has gone crazy these last 2 years let alone 30, and of course there is no way anyone can be accurate with an unusual item like that, but the circumstances were very unfortunate and it's a shame you no longer have it. The fact that it was so large could possibly mean that it was a mould/die for making something other than coins/medals, I don't know, perhaps decorative bits of military armour or something. I am certainly not aware of any Roman coins being that large. In fact it would have been very difficult for them to strike such a large object with the force needed to imprint the design, so was it more likely a mould, not a die? There are many questions that will remain un answered. I am not aware of any mints being in the Manchester area, but my Roman coin knowledge is pretty limited.

Charles III?
Chris Perkins replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I think I may have seen a foreign coin with a latin 'Arthur' on it before, can't remember what it was though. -
Dear Carol, it couldn't be simpler..... Obviously the value depends on the conditions of the individual coins. You'll find that if they are not within the collectable grades the silver ones will be worth bullion value and the bronze ones won't be worth that much at all. Are there too many to send in the post? If not, you are welcome to send them to me for an offer, but you really shouldn't expect a Kings ransom for modern coins like that. Alternatively you can do a little research yourself, and perhaps start with this book: http://www.predecimal.com/books/ccgb2004framed.htm I always pay fiar prices for coins, but like to warn people that general collections of circulated coins like that are rarely worth very much. Thanks,

I cannot take any credit for that one Bob, as Jana ordered them and sent them out while I'm in the UK!

Complete 20th century bronze collection
Chris Perkins replied to a topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Dear Glyn, If the collection is only 17% Uncirculated, and assuming those uncirculated coins are not just the 60's ones I think your fathers estimate is probably very ambitious. If the 65% that are VF minimum are dated say 1930 - 1967 then those are not really in the minimum collectable grades. The fact they are a set and that there will be scarcer years among them makes them too good for scrap, but please don't expect a lot! Please do submit a list with accurate grades for us to see. -

Any of them particularly rare? Maybe some of them have heels struck on top of other heels, and I'm sure she has many different patterns in her collection. Well back to the subject, I can't be a sexist pig on the BBC can I -

I just don't think many women are into that kind of thing. I do have female customers, I don't think it's quite the odds you mention but it is certainly male dominated. In fact when I think about the women I know, none of them collect anything, and none of them even have a hobby as such. I take it you are female then, mystery guest? -

You're damn right mystery guest! Maybe I'll do a Bargain Hunt kind of programme, just for teams to buy coins, in the same format as the David Dickinson version. With an auction at the end! Well you never know do you, but perhaps it's too much of a minority thing, unfortunately. -
BBC 3CR Broadcast ideas please
Chris Perkins replied to Chris Perkins's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Well we've discussed coin related music before somewhere in here, perhaps Pink Floyd's Money, The Beatles, Abba etc. The sex pistols God save the Queen would be appropriate! And it's BBC 3 Counties, which is broadcast to the areas mentioned above and can be picked up as far as London in the south, East Angia in the East, Swindon in the West and Lincolnshire in the North. I'll be on 3.30 - 4.00pm Friday February the 27th, and then monthly depending how it goes for all involved. -

Thanks, actually those silver pennies/twopences are not from where it has worn off. You can quite easily remove the copper plating chemically Same goes for the 'copper' euro coins.... I've done it here, but would not consider selling them as special. I think Wybrit's idea are probably too advanced for your average member of the public listener, but certainly food for thought. -
Of course I have to do what I'm told, I can't just talk rubbish for hours, but if I get the opportunity during my forthcoming Radio Broadcast to divulge some wise numismatic words, what shall I say to the people of Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and the surounding areas? - The truth about the New Pence 2p rumour - The truth about the £2 Queen with necklace rumour - The fact that most coins are worthless, and any from the last 100+ years should ideally be in super condition to be really collectable. Please add more ideas for me below!

59 exists, but in 1961 South Africa became a republic and the 50c (Half a Rand) is more or less the coin that replaced it in terms of size. That ran until 1964.

Bloody hell I'm 25 and I sound like your Gran!

You just want to collect everything don't you! Blimey. You should perhaps get uni out of the way and maybe even spend a little bit of the money on what's it's supposed to be spent on. There will still be bargains to be had when you're done. You cannot possibly buy everything that takes your fancy in your position. You should wait until you have a full time job for that kind of thing, and concentrate on one area now.

Hello everyone, Well I often get positive remarks about this website and the way I conduct my business, and there is certainly a feel good factor when that happens. Yesterday I received perhaps the ultimate feel good factor email! I was invited by John Pilgrim of BBC Three Counties Radio to do a monthly call in slot on the radio station about coins and coin collecting, and he asked me to call him as soon as I could to discuss it over the telephone. I got the email quite late in the day, so called him the day after (Saturday 31st January). He explained he was the presenter, told me about the format etc, and that the studio is in Luton. I'm booked for February 27th, 3.30-4.00pm just for a general chat and a quick phone in. If it goes well and I'm happy to, it will be a monthly thing. Apparently the Radio station can often be picked up in places as far south as London, north as Lincolnshire, west as Swindon and east as far as East Anglia. Alas I can't seem to find where it is broadcast on the internet, so assume it isn't! But I'll ask when there. This is the Radio Station website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/threecounties/ I am of course excited, and naturally nervous too. I think the first thing I'll do is sort out that bloody 2p rumour and the £2 coin with the Queen wearing a necklace thing too....Should prevent at least 10 emails a month.

Great idea, but they'd probably do what spammers do and change it slightly to 'R@re' or even 'Rair'. And I think ebay should charge for 'Rare' but refund the fee if the item sells for over it's start price. I mean there probably are lots of other items that really are rarish.
-
Whenever I see the typical 'Rare' ebay coins I always wonder exactly what qualifies the seller to state that fact? I mean is it perhaps the fact that they only have 1, or have seen 1? Why can't the trade desriptions act be relevant on ebay auctions too? Because as we know, that year was fozen until 1970 and is the most common penny year of all time. I'm with you on the Heads side thing, I get so many people stating that the monarch is on the back, and usually don't bother replying to them. I think ebay would seriously raise their profile with collectors if they didn't allow crap like that and had a adjudicator to remove wastes of space.

I think he must be foreign, because 'Imprint' may be a bad translation and 'Elisabeth' is the correct German spelling, which is close. If he's British, then we have trouble!
-
You mean these ones Bob? http://www.predecimal.com/collectors/shop/...isplay_case.htm Or just email me, there is nothing I can't get now that I could earlier!

This is what we've all been waiting for, it's a scan of two pages from a book kinding provided by another member It shows by weight and the face value, how many coins were minted each year. I have passworded the directory, which is here: http://www.predecimal.com/mintages/ If you want to see the 2 pages you'll have to ask me, Eliza or Sylvester for the username and password. I certainly don't mind if you email me, but to contact the other two you'll have to use the Personal messenger on this forum. Enjoy!
