TomGoodheart Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 (edited) One of those 'sharp as a knife' but with all the faults of hammered coinage (double striking, breaking flan, weak patches where the flan is thinner in parts...) S.2799 Sharp G1/2 . Edited May 13, 2015 by TomGoodheart 1 Quote

damian1986 Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 What's that chap Damian?Edward the Elder. The moneyer is Beornner and there is one other known for that particular moneyer / type (sold in Part 1 of the Carlyton-Britton collection and now in the Fitzwilliam museum). Not a big deal considering just how varied the ornaments (trefoils, crosses, pellets, ...) are on the horizontal type coins, but the crosses above and below is quite a bit scarcer (trefoils above and below is most common). Coin was made in Wessex, probably Winchester. It was struck later in the reign, somewhere around 910 to 915 AD. Quote

HistoricCoinage Posted May 13, 2015 Posted May 13, 2015 A great idea for a thread, Paulus ( )! The images don't do these toned pieces justice, I'm confident. Quote
