Possibly - but they normally say 'Cleaned' if that is the reason for rejection!

Presumably, they didn't like the mottled colouring, so reminscent of US 'natural toning' and concluded that it was the result of cleaning and artificial toning. Unless that is, your photo isn't an accurate depiction of the true colour.

Agreed! However, everything can tone...they're saying YOUR coin has toned for a second time (or more), which implies it's been cleaned, nothing more! I wonder if it went in sensitively dipped whether they would reject it, because not ever coin is toned in life, as we know?

Correct. My 1731 shilling spent the first 275 years of its life in the bottom of a Georgian glass. Lustre on one side is like the day it was struck.
