Chris Perkins Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 Had an earthquake today. Noticeable shaking of windows and ceiling, just for a couple of seconds, but enough to make you start wondering what the bloody hell's going on and whether you need to take emergency action. I've never experienced anything like it. It was logged at 1237 local time and at the epicentre was strength 4.3:http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/earthquakes/quake-info/689940/M4.3-Sat-31-May-3km-NE-of-Skalna-Czech-Republic.html 1 Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Everything's fine, we were just shaken and not stirred. People that were outside on solid ground didn't even notice. We're about 45 miles from the epicentre. It was a remarkable demonstration of the power of those bubbling gases and molten rock miles under the surface. It's inspired me to go and visit the nearest volcano, which is about 30 miles away, the 974m (3,195') Schneehübel which apparently last flowed liquid lava a mere 300,000 years ago. There have been a number of shakes today and over the last week, but the big 4.3 was the only one still noticeable by the time it got to here (as far as I know). Quote
scott Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 (edited) one?nearest volcanohttp://volcanodiscovery.com/vogtland-volcanic-area-earthquakes.htmlshows 15... in 24 hourshttp://www.volcanodiscovery.com/vogtland-volcanic-area.htmlsupposedly an area known for earthquakes Edited May 31, 2014 by scott Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 31, 2014 Author Posted May 31, 2014 Yes, but the others are mostly 2's with a couple of 3 or just over, which may not be strong enough to get to us 45 miles away. It's certainly the only one I've ever felt. 4.3! Quote
copper123 Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 bubbling gasses - arrr yes that will be a number 2 lol 1 Quote
Peckris Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I remember one in Birmingham about 25 years ago. Caused buildings to sway quite noticeably. The computers - in a hermetically sealed air-conditioned environment - went down, of course. Quote
Rob Posted May 31, 2014 Posted May 31, 2014 I posted a piece on the very same subject matter when we had one a few years ago. I can't remember the title of it now to find and link to it. It was a rather bizarre vibration yet somehow floating sensation as I remember. Quote

Close enough to Birmingham, but apparently it was felt throughout England and Wales. 5.1 on the scale. Quote
Gary1000 Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 My first and only brush with an earthquake was in the Philippines about 2 years ago. We had a 6.3 out to sea some distance away, but laying in bed at about one in the morning was quiet interesting, I guess the effect was something like I imagine laying on a water bed. Everything went backwards and forwards for a second or two. Of course I used the opportunity to turn to the missus and ask her if the earth had moved for her as well but as usual she had slept through it. 1 Quote
Nordle11 Posted June 2, 2014 Posted June 2, 2014 I think I remember the one Rob's referring to, all I remember was the desk in my room wobbling and thinking to myself that someone was banging on the ceiling or something?! It wasn't until it was announced as an earthquake that I knew..Unfortunately I wasn't born in time to experience the one in Shropshire.. Quote
