oldgroat Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Hi ForumWell I thought I'd say hello as a newbie and also post this George IV crown for your comments advice as to its authenticity? Quote
Paulus Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Welcome along, umm ... 'Old Groat' ! It looks okay to me (from the pics), do you have any cause to doubt it? Quote
oldgroat Posted April 7, 2014 Author Posted April 7, 2014 Hi PaulusIm not sure , Should there be text on the edge? I looked it up and can only find reference to secundo or tertio text on edge? Thanks for looking, appreciate any adviceKind Regards Quote
Rob Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 Yep, that's a dud. There are no George IV crowns with a milled edge, only with raised letters. The figure 2 is all wrong as well. You may also find the weight is only about 22-23g if it has been made from white metal. Quote
Peter Posted April 7, 2014 Posted April 7, 2014 One of the coins the Chinese produce is the 1822 crown.I was looking at the Alibaba.com site the other day. There was an actual thread on Coincommunity recently. Quote
oldgroat Posted April 8, 2014 Author Posted April 8, 2014 Hello Rob,PeterThanks for confirming my suspicions!Interestingly or not this one weighs in at 27.6 gm.Allegedly from a 20 year old private collection. It would be great if you could shed some light on whats wrong with the figure?Best Regards Quote
Peter Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Hi OGThe correct weight is 28.2759g.I will try and find the link to the Chinese manufacturers site tonight. Quote
Rob Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 The whole date looks to be in a different font.https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1822+crown&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=iLBDU8WKG8Ld7QaxzID4Ag&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAg&biw=1920&bih=914#facrc=_&imgrc=WaXDXdcGBLhIRM%253A%3Bk9KcpLiKbKbaWM%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk%252Fpics%252Fg4%252F5s%252F5s22s.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk%252Fpics%252F5s.html%3B600%3B300 Quote
azda Posted April 8, 2014 Posted April 8, 2014 Never mind the Font, the coin has a Reeded edge in his picture which is wrong. A 20 year old collection you say, from where did you buy this 20 year old coin? We like to keep up with people who sell fakes and would appreciate a name if it were an ebay seller or dealer on the net Quote
oldgroat Posted April 9, 2014 Author Posted April 9, 2014 Hi AllThanks for the advice, comparison much appreciated.I must admit to my inexperienced eye struggling a little with the differences in the date font.I'm afraid I can't identify the seller as it was a private purchase, he said the collection was his dads and that he had known it all his life,is it not feasible that it could be a 20 year old fake? Also are the genuine crowns pure silver? Thanks againKind Regards Quote
Garrett Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 From Wikipedia,For silver crowns, the grade of silver adhered to the long-standing standard (established in the 12th century by Henry II) – the Sterling Silver standard of 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper. This was a harder-wearing alloy, yet it was still a rather high grade of silver. It went some way towards discouraging the practice of "clipping", though this practice was further discouraged and largely eliminated with the introduction of the milled edge seen on coins today. Peter Posted April 9, 2014 Posted April 9, 2014 Clipping was restricted to hammered coins which by design were very thin. Quote
