angela2659 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 hi everyone,i came across this pound coin in my great grandads collection and he has it sealed and i am wondering if any body no's if there is something special about ity or noti just dont know why he would have it sealed if its nothing......thanks Quote
copper123 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 First pound coin 1983 - kept as it was the first worth about £2 - your granddad would have done better putting it in a building society account - but he never knew that . Quote
Rob Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 No reason that I can think of unless it's a proof and it was sealed to protect the surfaces. From the images it doesn't look to be anything special. Alternatively, being the 1st year of issue, maybe he thought it might be worth something in the future. Quote
Colin G. Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 I would guess it may be taken from a specimen (Brilliant Uncirculated set). Quote
angela2659 Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 i thought it was the first strike pound coin and that maybe it was gold.. Quote

Accumulator Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Hi Angela, by the sound of it you've inherited two coin collections. Very nice! The possible Scarborough piece and the 1983 pound are at opposite ends of the scale. You inferred before that you have a lot of coins which, I would guess, sit somewhere between these (i.e. the main body of your collections). It would be good to see a few of these coins so that we can get a feel for what you have and advise you accordingly. We do want to help and there's a great deal of expertise here, but we need to get a better understanding to do so. Quote
angela2659 Posted December 24, 2013 Author Posted December 24, 2013 here are some other coins/sets i inherited. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Looks like quite a bit of gold there! Quote

It looks like a lot of proof sets and individual proof coins, possibly some gold, maybe Britannias and certainly commemorative coins. Unfortunately these are modern and not my area of interest, but they do sell. Others here will be able to advise you further, but will still need a higher resolution photo. Quote
DaveG38 Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 That looks like a 1950 Proof set in the red box (centre right of pic) - if so then there's definitely some value there as these are popular. Quote
HistoricCoinage Posted December 24, 2013 Posted December 24, 2013 Plenty of us members on here will purchase whole collections or sell on commission. Good photographs and a detailed list or a visit are helpful. Quote
