Hi all, just bought an okay 1897 crown for my collection. It's slightly larger than my other crowns!! As in it doesn't for snug into the lighthouse capsule but becomes wedged. I'd say a mm or 2 max, the only thing I can notice is on the edge of the coin the 'join' mark looks almost like an 'I' as its larger than on other crowns...should I be concerned?

Do you have pictures?

(See the Sticky in the Beginners Forum about posting pictures here).

It's generally a join that runs at the circumference that you should worry about, though they tend not to plague the modern-milled coinage I have to say!

If your coin is cast, you'd certainly notice a difference in quality, if you already have other examples to compare it to?

Best get a couple of images up, to include the edge, as Peckris suggests, as it could be a fake from dies?

Welcome aboard, it's always good to get some new collectors amongst us! :)

There does seem to be a small amount of diameter variability with crowns. I've had crowns in the past that wedge into the lighthouse capsules, whereas others are quite free. I wouldn't be unduly concerned.

It looks like the collar sprung open at this joint in striking. If you look at image 2 there is a discontinuity in the circumference and a flaw impinging on the rim at this point. That would also explain why it is a bit larger, as the flan has spread due to collar failure.

TThere' a strange thing above the E of REGINA (a bit hard to concentrate when the pictures are dissolving every few seconds in a slide show). But it looks ok to me. £35 was probably about right for it. I've seen that charged for more worn specimens than yours.

There is a pause button to the left of the pictures that stops the slide show
