secret santa Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 No - a useful guide is that the top of the curved part of the 3 is just about level with the top of the curved part of the 6 on open 3 varieties but lower on normal varieties. Quote

Actually, ignore that, it's not always true !!! Quote

I thought the point of contention with open 3 was the downstroke was curved . That has a curve and from the ones i have seen they either point directly at the middle of the six or between the middle and the bottom? Edited November 6, 2017 by zookeeperz Quote
jelida Posted November 6, 2017 Posted November 6, 2017 The main designator of the open 3 is that it is open. This is due to the lower curve of the three being much straighter than the normal 3. The bar of the three points much more directly at the 6, and the bar does appear to curve. All these are very obvious in the hand, but much less clear on photos because of lighting and resolution issues. But compared with the examples given above this is clearly not an open 3. Best to look at the whole shape of the digit rather than to try to analyse specific areas, Ebay and many other photos are just not good enough in most cases. Jerry Quote

Jerry Oh totally agree I am just quoting LCA and seeing as they are the graders as well This is their designated marker for open 3 " The variety confirmed by the 3 having a curved downward diagonal stroke," So you can see it can cause confusion when you have one with a curved downstroke.
