Hi all,

I am quite new to coin collecting and am trying to specialise. In £2 coins. The other day I came across an Isambard Kingdom Brunel £2 coin (Spink 4581) with a portrait of Brunel on it.

It appears that where the 2006 date should be stamped it is missing! Could anyone please tell me if this is a known error or any other information??????

Thanks in advance.

I know nothing at all about decimal coinage, but an undated £2 coin is likely to be of great interest, can you put any pictures up?

Hi their, thanks for the reply. I have attached a photo and the date would be at the bottom but as you can see it's just blank.

Many thanks.

Looked at images via Google and my own estimation is that the date section has been carved out post-production. There should be a 'forged plate' motif connected by chain links and at the same height. However, there is a rectangular 'hole' there instead, as if cut out.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I have posted another photo and I think that you see from this one that the 'forge plate is connected to the links and at the same height. Any other thoughts would be much appreciated.

Unfortunately your picture is too out of focus to see the detail clearly.

If it is the only one I doubt it will ever create a head of steam (excuse the pun :) )

Bearing in mind it is a 2006 coin it could be unique.

Value...£??

What anyone is prepared to pay for it. (Sell it with the RM letter though.)

As Peckris effectively says, it's very difficult to predict how much someone will pay for a 'one off'. You need a number of rarities to sell before you can establish a likely 'market value'.

That said, some people collect errors like this and with the backing of the RM letter confirming that it's not been 'created' as a novelty, but is a genuine error it might do OK.

How much? Well, the 'undated' 20p was well known and eventually settled to about £40 each although the earlier sales were in some cases much higher. The only way to find out how much someone will pay is .. to sell it I'm afraid.

Though I don't think a bit of publicity (such as contacting a local newspaper) would hurt first! Local man Finds Rare Coin! might just be what's needed to raise some interest!

Alternatively, you could contact Chris, the owner of this site and see if he's interested? Assuming you're keen to sell?
