That looks to be not far off EF, Declan, with shield virtually intact and good hair detail. Neat find.

Really? Now this is important. I've got it booked in as a VF, but even if I only bump it up to VF+ it becomes my most valuable coin. At VF it's only No. 18!

Votes on grade would be very welcome!

It's a slightly weird one, that. At first glance it's a VF coin, but when you start examining closely for wear, there is less than you'd think. I'd give it GVF but the wear on the chest and part of the laurel wreath and hair makes it too far off EF in my book.

I think VF money nails it due to the rim knocks at 10 o'clock on the reverse.

A pleasing type a :)

Good, thanks Peter - that makes me feel better - I only paid a fiver for it. GVF money would have made me feel guilty!

Ignore our resident pessimist - those aren't so much 'knocks' as 'faint taps, almost inaudible' :D

I have to confess it never leapt out at me either. In all honesty i don't think I'd be unhappy if I'd bought GVF blind and your coin arrived!

I'll give you a fiver for it, Declan, then you won't have to feel guilty about it anymore! ;)

A deformed rim/edge is an imperfection, however obvious. I'm on Peter's side. :)

Me too, the eye is drawn to it, so a negative in the eye appeal stakes, still a bargain though! :)

Well I'm just going to have to jolly well go and get my PC out then in that case! ;)

That's because eye phones attempt to do what they say on the label. Wrong sensory object to use for making a call, nor is the phone very well adapted for visual reception. Use the right tool for the job. :)

It is slightly weird in that it shows signs of wear in places that are inconsistent with its overall appearance. There is wear on the chest as you say, Peck, so I agree with your assessment of GVF.

Well that's 3 votes to two in favour of GVF. However, taking into consideration the stature of those voting VF, I declare a draw, and the next opinion holds the casting vote...who's it going to be?

Posted

I'm probably the least qualified person on this forum to vote but I'd say GVF - Where's Derek (Red) when you need him? :)

As I said OK GVF but max VF money due to the edge knocks.

Well, at the risk of drawing the ire of Peter AND Rob, I have to say I don't mark a coin down very much at all for edge knocks that are hardly noticeable.

that's just who I had in mind, Debbie!

Ironically enough, it was guidance from Derek's book, "The Standard Guide to Grading British coins", which first led me to think your 1864 might not be too far off EF. Although as Peck points out, there is wear in the chest area, (and on the gown), which lessens it to GVF. However, the fine hair and shield detail, which are classic indicators of wear on a bun, seem more redolent of NEF.

This is purely in terms of wear and takes no account of edge knocks. Although, separately, along with stains, these can have an adverse effect on grading. The edge knock on your coin is not really too noticeable anyway.
