Old Britsh Coins

Hello, just came across my old coin collection. I am just wondering what are the rare years and common errors ect. that I should be looking for in Shillings, Two Shillings, Sixpences and other British coins from the early 1900's.

Theres a 1928 Florin in there as well I think.

Also what years have what silver contents? Am I right in thinking pre- 1947 have silver in them and post do not? What are the border years and what values in scrap for these coins?

Hi FD and welcome. In 1920, the silver content of all British coins was reduced from 92.5% to 50%, and then in 1947 changed to CuNi, so your Florin is 50%. There are quite a few bullion buying sites, but I found this one gives reasonable prices. Other people here can advise on scarcer dates etc as it's not my area.

Seems reasonable for a "cash for gold" set up...there are rip off boys out there.

However any scrap goes to proper set ups without the overheads.

I have 450g of 1920- 1947 coins so if I half the current 0.999 silver price of £206.60, to £103.30, and that what the coins are worth scrap?

Also I got one 1918 shilling out of the whole lot. I have a load more somewhere but I can't remember where I put them. My God damn messy attic swallows all my good stuff.

My Dad's a scrap metal dealer so we know all about that mate, theres still plenty of con artist's dealing in lower value metals unfortunately.

All we want now is for the price of Cu-pro Nickle and Bronze to rise substantially and perhaps all that crap on ebay will start to disappear.

Many thanks but no luck unfortunately, one year out with a 1936 shilling and a 1937 Georgie.

I'll have to stick around though as I think this could be my new hobby, plus I've got a few bags of shrapnel that need finding and sorting.

as much as your seeking out rare years, also try and learn about grading too.....theres some great books around.....and this the best forum on coins going............enjoy.
