coin watch Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 Coinex is around the corner (28th & 29th Sept) Anyone going? What are your thoughts on this once a year coin fair? I have attended the last nine years which kind of suggests I do like this fair but in all honesty I can't help but feel the past few years have been a bit of a disappointment, this maybe due to the serious lack of the coins I want to find being on show but what I have found more disappointing is what I feel this fair is aiming for now, and it seems it's not the collector that comes first anymore!? Maybe it's just me but I don't like the £50 "Earlybird" entry idea, why do this? I suppose I can see some advantages to this for a certain few but does this kind of ploy really promote our hobby to the every day collector. Anyway I shouldn't moan cos I'm aiming for the free Saturday entry, not that there will anything to buy after the person who buys a 50k coin on the previous day to also buy the only one coin I might be interested in with his loose change of £500!!!!!.....If you get what I mean!! Accumulator Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 (edited) I did wonder whether to attend on the Saturday. I really don't see the point of paying £50 for Friday entry (and losing a day's work). It's fairly unlikely that I will find any coins I really want for the collection, though I suppose that's possible. For me it would be more about looking at products associated with collecting and chatting to one or two dealers. Edited September 18, 2012 by Accumulator Quote
Rob Posted September 18, 2012 Posted September 18, 2012 They must charge £50 because people have proved in the past they will pay this much. Harrogate is £2 on the Friday. York is free. Most regular fairs have a nominal entry fee, but £50 is prohibitive. Having said that, with such a high entry charge it clearly states they want to give the big spenders priority. But the big spenders are well known to the dealers and so would normally be offered a 50K coin based on past spending patterns irrespective of an impending fair and not just coincident with Coinex. The small collector is unlikely to be affected by missing out on a £50K coin. Quote
Peter Posted September 19, 2012 Posted September 19, 2012 I have tried all the fairs outside London.(Harrogate..boring ,Wakefield OK...York OK but my favourite is the Midland at the Motorbike museum.March,June,September,December are the bigger ones when there are extra dealers.I have never left there unhappy. no muggings on the tube plus a nice out of town location. .Well run ,fantastic facilities although a 250 mile round trip.I will be back Quote
