Good evening. I wonder if any one can help with the value of this coin? It is Aethelred penny and of the Warminster mint. The moneyer is Godwine (although spelt wrong on the coin!)

The colour looks a bit different...but is the same coin.

Thanks for any help.

Hi

Welcome to the forum. :)

A very nice coin (as long as it is not an Ashmore copy)What is its provenance?

Spink 2010 valued S1154 at £250 in vf.The cross is too large for S1150...which is a pity.

Spink recommends an article written in BNJ 68 on the many varieties/mints for this coin.

In this case Spink isn't detailed enough.I would also add that at auction or Ebay I can't see your coin making

less than £400.

It looks like North "CRUX" type Fig.5 no sceptre but with diadem.

For a more accurate valuation hopefully Clive of Historic Coinage will pop by.

Is it for sale? :)

Thanks for the welcome Peter. I found the coin on the River Thames, I am a licensed metal detectorist. I have been offered substantially more than the price quoted here.

The coin is going to auction next month....so yes Rob, it is for sale :)

Hi Danelaw

Some nice coins (and other things) come out of the Thames mud....worth getting mucky for.

I don't know if the Warminster mint coins are rare without reading the BNJ article.Good luck at the auction, however it may be an idea to sell to this forum to avoid commission you pay and also the commission on the hammer the buyer pays which has to be factored in.

It's worth breaking my rule not to get two coins of the same type if possible. I have a Cissbury last small cross as a Hobson's Choice piece because all bar one of 39(?) coins for the mint are of this type, but Warminster is sufficiently difficult as a mint to justify doubling up on the type.

The coin went to auction a few weeks ago to be photographed. It comes up the end of June in London.

It's amazing the different valuations I've been given for other coins. One dealer in London has to be joking  . Two coins that I took in were valued extraordinarily low!

One offer was £30 to £40...went for £700. Two others were spot on. And one didn't even want it.

And this surprises you why Dane? Obviously the 1st was looking for massive profit. I won't ask the name to save him from embaressment

Trouble is the so called experts are not. :o

Even third party grading companies sometimes get items seriously wrong. On this forum we have experts who do specialise.

One particular BNTA member sold me a known about rare variety for common issue prices (I didn't complain). My next dealing with him he messed up and wasted my time as what he thought he had...he hadn't..

There are well known dealers (innocently) selling Chinese fakes on Ebay and Auction houses often mess up(mostly noted by members of this forum).Hang around and post more Thames mud goodies.

The fact that Rob wanted to buy your coin should reassure you :)

Which auction house, may I ask?

Unfortunately I can think of many like that. But there's one in London that is particularly famous for that and then charges astronomical prices.

Looks like a fight is on between Clve and Rob for this coin...........Best of luck gents

Quite right Peter. I didn't want to come on here with the sole purpose of advertising the coin, which is why I left the auction name out.

It is a important piece and deserves to reside in a well attributed UK collection...far too nice to pick up dust in a museum or end up over the pond.

There'll be far more people in the auction room and with current trends it'll be interesting to see what it fetches.

The tin farthing also looks quite good apart from the hole on the OBV. It is a hole? Did you also sell this?

LOL...you 1D boys :P

Tin farthings were plugged with copper/brass to discourage forgery.

Early Charles 1st farthings were often given brass wedges.

Now who might that be...? Does it begin with 'C' and end with 'T'?

No need to be rude, Derek.

It seems like we are talking about the same people here anyway!

The tin farthing pictured is exactly how it came out of the river. It looks like the powder covering the coin would dust off. It was a nightmare removing some of it...in the end I left most of it on there. It auctioned at £700.

And Peter is right about the plugs.

This was plugged with copper, some are found without the plug. The price of going across the Thames on a boat in 1690 was a farthing. Someone obviously dropped this one.

In the early seventies a dectorist found a leather pouch on the river near Wapping. It was filled with farthings fron the 1600's. :o
