New here - need advice - Queen mother silver coins

Hi Everyone,

It's with mixed emotions I join this forum. My grandfather passed away last week, he was a coin collector for many years. My family wish to sell some of the coins to help pay funeral expenses. If I put some photos on here with description would anyone be able to give me an idea of what the coins are worth?. They are all Queen mother Silver proof coins.

Hello Jon,

Condolences.

No need for photographs as they are roughly worth their scrap weight.

Add all of the weights from the certificates and check the spot price to find the value. Most sets are 12 or 24 coin sets and most are 0.925 standard silver. Based on that supposition the value will be between £250 and £500.

Sorry to hear about your grandad.

One thing puzzles me though - you say he was a collector for many years, yet only had one single modern series? It may be worth asking what else there is ("My family wish to sell some of the coins")? It may be that, not knowing much about the subject, they looked at these modern glossy proofs and decided that was where the value was. Yet actually, if he had other, older coins, they could be worth much more if of the right type and in the right condition.

I'm sorry to hear of your news.

I think you may have realised that modern coin sets are in the main only worth their scrap bullion value.A few companies sold these (and still are) for vastly inflated profits.

If your grandfather had other older coins take these along to a dealer for valuation...he will charge for this service unless he makes an offer to buy.

For your peace of mind if you post a few pictures we can give you ball park values.

It maybe worth searching identical coins on ebay to give you a rough idea although prices do fluctuate.

Thanks for the feedback, I've been trying to research these coins, its seems that they sell for between £20-£28 each on ebay. I've got 56 silver proof coins in total, weight ranges from 31.47g - 48g. I'm not really sure what collectors are looking for, do you think I should sell them all as one lot or each set individually?. My grandad paid thousands for these, but it looks as though their value now between £1200 - £1600.

We do have many other coins, going back to the 18th century, but we don't wish to sell them. My grandfather and great grandfather collected coins, and there is alot of family history attached. many of the coins my great grandfather collected were from his travels in both World Wars. The Silver proof coins however were bought by my grandad, in the hope they'd be a good investment and kept in a draw. it was his intention to sell them before he passed.

Minus the 10% ebay fee the listing fee and Paypal surcharge, so it wil be even less than that unfortunately. I'd be interested to hear what the other coins are if its not to much trouble, perhaps to many to list?

Try a few different methods to dispose.

Don't flood the market with single coins though.

Try BIN or parcel up 5 or so and BIN with best offer.

I spoke to a cash dealer today and he is paying 50p per g for pre 1920 silver (92.5%) and 25p ditto for pre 47 (50%).There will be a small premium for modern proof silver coins.

It is a pity he didn't collect gold.

Some do, some don't. If there's a lot of work involved, all dealers will charge. However, if you took in one or two coins for valuation, it's doubtful any reasonable dealer would charge you. And if they can give you a quick opinion off the top of their head, they wouldn't charge for that either. In between those two extremes, it's up to the particular dealer.
