DarrenH Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Good Morning,I have just inherited a coin collection from my late father,I have in approximation of 140 coins, in various dates, mainly pennies, and half pennies.I also have Florins, Crowns, half crowns, Three pence (brass 1946 & 49, un circulated good condition), 3 pence coin "maundy" money although the date escape's me at the moment (which I will update I'm sure it's from the 1920's Good condition) and a set of 1953 un circulated coronation coins. The overall condition of the pennies aren't fantastic, although some of them are in good condition.I also have a 1919 Heaton mint George V Penny, 1918 KN George V penny, 1919 KN George penny.basically I'm looking for advise on value's with the possibility of putting them up for sale.Any advise would be grateful Quote

I'll leave that part up to you. Good quality pics if you can please. Edited January 27, 2011 by azda Quote
DarrenH Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Hi AzdaThank you very much for the quick response and information given.I will be uploading pictures as soon as possible, and of the highest quality I can, to assist with anybody wishing to view them.Do you advise to put up the 46 & 49 three pence coins to as they are limited mint and VG condition?? Quote
azda Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Well, you say you have 140 coins. I'd like to see them all personally, and as this is a coin forum, i'm sure others would to and they would also help with grading and price. Some dealers will buy entire collections depending of grades and rarities etc, but being a Penny fan i asked for those first Take your time if you wish to upload the entire collection though, 140 coins will take time to photograph and it will be benificial to you also to have good pictures as references should you decide to sell them to dealers or ebay etc.So Pennies first please Quote

The 1946 & 49 threepences are both representative of scarce years, so unless they've been run over by a train will have some value as will the KN pennies. The maundy 3d you mention was actually a regular issue at the time, and unless virtually uncirculated will probably be worth little more than its metal content. And a final word of warning; don't raise your hopes too high as to value, most accumulations like this, although interesting are rarely worth a huge amount. Quote
DarrenH Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Hi,I will put a list on-line, as you have suggested to start with, as you say to upload all the coins double sided may take some time, although I will at some point do this as to help with the condition query's.I agree about the monitory value's, as you have stated, I am currently researching the various coin sites to get a rough ball park figure. Many Thanks Quote
Peter Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 The proof set of coronation coins maybe will get £50 on ebay...I paid £55 but a set sold for £46 recently...don't believe pricing books. Quote

Chris Perkins Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Always assume that all the coins are just worth a few pence each, because that is usually the case! Of all the coins that I get offered the majority cost more to post then they are worth. Any that break the £1 value barrier will be mini miracles.I wish I had £1 for every time someone has told me that the coins look to be in much better than average condition (particularly with the brass threepences) only to find that they are they usual average circulated £2-3, or 2p each in the case of pennies and all the normal dates of everything else (apart from pre 1947 silver of course).azda, I think it's wrong to ever mention 'quite a few pounds' in reply to a newbie, because it only gets them excited and in reality the H/KN coins in average condition are usually worth sub £1.I'm a cynic after years of doing this - but that's how it is. RobJ Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 (edited) I have a 1953 set like that, just in a plain plastic edge sealed pack, and indications are from checking around that they're worth between a fiver and a tenner. I had been looking around for a little while for a nice example of one of these sets until I recently found one that I liked.I'd agree the asking price is around £5 to £10 depending upon the toning on the coins. From what I learnt, the plastic encasing the coins becomes hard and brittle over time and can crack, thus its not unusual to find some coins in the set nicely toned but others very much worse for wear. Also as these sets were produced in large numbers the coins really do need to be in a well preserved state for them to have any value. With the sets that have all of the coins with a nice even tone being worth slightly more. Also, as touched upon earlier, £5 - £10 is the price that a Dealer would sell for, not purchase at. But are you sure they are uncirculated? Pictures of both sides are essential. Quote

DarrenH Posted January 28, 2011 Author Posted January 28, 2011 Good Morning All,Thanks for all the pointers,I do totally understand that although I have about 140-150 coins in the collection they may only be worth between £70 - £100 for the lot.Saying that I will put up pictures of the one's of interest to myself/others as they possibly/ maybe hold "a little value", however as I look further into this subject it has become a very interesting one to say the least. Not saying that, if a few of them that turn out to be worth something I may be open to offers, if there not then I see a nice collection being built up, using the coins already in place as a good starting point. I have a collection of key dates, which over this weekend I will be studying the coins I have.I also have an 1818 penny that I'm going to be looking closely at due to some pointers I've picked up.Thanks for all the advise, and thats worth something any way.Look's like I may be busy uploading this weekend :D Quote

azda Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Hence the reason i said that your 1919KN COULD be worth a bit of cash, everything depends in the state of your coins, another reason why good pictures are a must, so grade can then Be assesedA unc graded KN is worth quite a Bit, whereas a worn example just a few quid., a Big difference Quote
Peckris Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 I still say, and I'm surprised no-one else has, that uncirculated 1946 / 49 threepenny bits are worth a lot of money (hundreds the pair). IF IF IF they really are uncirculated. Quote
Chris Perkins Posted January 30, 2011 Posted January 30, 2011 Or there's my book (Collectors' Coins GB) shown on amzon via the links below or the pictures above on the main forum page. It covers from 1797 onwards and is great value. Personally my instict says that you'd be lucky to raise £70-£100 for them (50p per coin average would be incredibly lucky). And, on rotographic.com near the bottom of the home page you can download the 2005 version of my book for free as a PDF....outdated, but better than nothing.
