Hi does anyone know much about miniature coins of victoria?

Each measures approx 13mm and they appear to be made from silver which is tarnished almost black.

I cant find any like these on the net and wondered if anybody might have some pictures they could share.

Many thanks, Mike

Have a look on ebay for "model" or "lauer" or "moore" in the coins section, you should find some examples.

Here are some I had previously for sale

The best book on this type of toy money is by a fellow called de Solo Rogers. There is also a good selection in the Fitzwilliam Museum and you can see them all on line. The book is seriously expensive but can be ordered to view from your library for £1.5. If the coins you are looking at are dated 1887 I have all the images and book details. Pay no attention to the rarity ratings as I have found them unreliable.

This is not my area of interest, but I found this quote from the first link that you posted to be most fascinating. :)

"The purpose of these coins was to show off the engraving expertise of the firm and act as advertising for their business, for sale as toys for children and for dolls houses, for educational and teaching purposes and as specific promotional items for other businesses."

Excellent stuff! :)

Thanks for the information Chingford. :)
