First Coin Buying Expedition

I have an example of all the dates/major types of farthing back to 1672 - the only missing one is a James II 1684 which is extremely rare. Now if one comes on the market at an sort of sensible prices and in almost any kind of condition, I'll probably buy it, simply because I'm not likely to see another.

I noticed it when I was browsing through EBay a little while ago. I'm not sure you are already aware of it or not or if it may be within your price range, but I thought that I would let you know just incase you didn't.

I thought that it was a Charles II 1684 Farthing that you required, but it was infact a James II 1684 Farthing.

but yea, a rare coin is a rare coin if you can get it in your price range then great.

i had the same problems as others with getting bits and pieces for mine, took me ages to find an example of James II in my budget

this was it. cost me a tenner, found it at my dealers in the foreign stuff still cost me £10 he thought it was gun money, trust me this was one of the hardest purchases i ever made £10 for what is essentialy erm.. a piece of metal is probably the best way to describe it, but yea i needed that monarch, it was in budget, it was lower grade then i wanted but when will another come up gun money is vastly overpriced, british james II is all rare so will be way out of my league.

i still havn't found any commonwealth for under £20 though

i think personally, if you want a coin for your collection, have a GOOD look, bargains come up in odd places, i have coins i have no right owning with my budget, 1771 farthing, 1858 small date farthing, 1958 50 franc, (probably my most valueable coin by a long chalk) to name a few.

i recommend scouring ebay with a fine tooth comb there are bargains to be had, i have had my fair share even as recently as last week, of course if you learn the values of things you could buy something on the cheap then sell it on for a profit (reading this thread makes me want to sell my 50 franc and buy a nice commonwealth piece... but yea.. not going to happen, because i enjoy all my coins.

now what did i hear abouth 1825 farthings?

I went out today for an extended lunch and had the pleasure of an afternoon on more wine and Ebay....what a load of tatt.My eldest daughter has just found my banknote and cheque albums and insists I sell them as I don't have a keen interest....she will be after my fossils and Jazz mags soon.She see's my paypal account as an easy touch....whatch out for teenage daughters my eldest says I'm loaded...I'm not but she is clucking at my collection and a life time passion...it would quickly go to New look etc.I mentioned the gold could go...but at the expense of better copper...none of the household women were impressed.

Of course, once you have explained that it is fine for them to have it but they will have to pay for it using their own money, that incredibly important life saving thing just doesn't seem that important any longer to them. lol

I put my xmas order in with the wife this week, a Hardy Demon 7000 reel. She baulked at the £280 price tag and I politely pointed out that the reel will last me a lifetime, unlike the hundreds of pounds worth of make-up, clothes and hair "product" that she throws money at every year. "prosecution rests my lord"!

The lucky so and so only hooked and landed a 12lb fish on her first day fishing, her response "well I don't know why you never catch anything, it's easy"

I should send her to the auctions for me, she'd probably find a Petition Crown in a box full of wasters!!!

I fished the Tay in the 80's whilst staying at Taymouth castle (friends had the lease)there were 9 of us and we drank the Kenmore Hotel dry.The only fish we caught were tiny trout smaller than the spinners we were using.I wandered to the river with my air rifle in one hand and a bottle of scotch in the other...I was sober but the ghillie wanted to call the police...oh to be young again.

I've had many days on the day when I have been too drunk to stand let alone cast. My ghillie would have taken the bottle from you to drink himself and wouldn't have raised an eyebrow at the rifle!
