Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Hi I have an 1856 farthingthere appears to be a tiny numeral like a '7' and perhaps a 5 impressed into the very edge of the coin above Victoria's profileso together it could be '57'Is there any reason why this may have been done the more I look it it does look like a tiny 5 and 7 spaced out over DEI is there any reason why his would have been done could it have been off one of the dies and not intended to be impressed Of could this have been done by some eccentric victorian but why bother? The rim also looks quite raised both sides Thanks Russ777 Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 To add the numbers are sideways on reading down rhe edge of coin not perpendicular to the Queens head.Probably another case of seeing marks/things that are not thereBut fascinating it does look like a '7'Russ777 Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Hi heres a close up pic. Could not post last night as too dull. Where we are lookinhg is just above the DEI on heads side I thought it might just be a ding but the one that looks like a '7' got me... Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Heres the whole coin in case I missed anything. Maybe tampered with or in production? Some areas of coin very clear Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 I can't see anything at all Well it might be my vivid imagination but if you look at first scan it looks like a numeral '7' in the rim just below the D of 'DEI'its small but can you see what I am on about now???Russ777 Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 if you left click on the part view pic it brings it up slightly better, looking at the rim below by D on outer edge looks like a 7 numeral Quote

There is also a stop between the G & R of GRATIA which is more prominent than the '7' but which also shouldn't be there. Given the condition of the coin, any non-standard feature would have to be very prominent to gain any credibility. Unless you can show a similar feature on one that is close to mint state or where there is no question of environmental damage, you are on a hiding to nothing. Quote
Russ777 Posted October 26, 2010 Author Posted October 26, 2010 Thanks Rob at least you can see what I meanabove the I in the rim of DEI there also appears a '5' shapeIt just seems very neat where it is placedRuss777 Quote
VickySilver Posted October 26, 2010 Posted October 26, 2010 Think I need to visit my optometrist....Just do not see anything I would consider remarkable. Good somebody has eyes, but seriously I think it would have to be a bit more prominent to be of note. Keep up the alert level to scouting these coins. Did you just happen to glance at the coin and see this or do you look at all your coins in such detail? Quote
