davidrj Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 We've discussed the weak strikings of the Kings Norton pennies here before, but what do folk here make of this 1919?Nice shield detail but Oh how horrid, looks like it has had a serious case of dandruff, the light bits are "lustrous" as if bits have flaked off.I'm guessing a blank full of bubblesDavid Quote
argentumandcoins Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Looks more likely that the coin has been in a fire, obviously post production. Quote

But there looks to be a rather nice 1919KN lurking beneath that scurf! Quote
£400 for a Penny ? Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Looks perhaps like it might have spent a little time in the ground ? Quote
Accumulator Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 Have been collecting/accumulating on and off for many years and only recently became interested in coins again. It's hardly my favourite piece, but always wondered about the history of this 1937 penny with swastika overstrike? Being 'wartime' related, I presume it's on topic? Quote
Accumulator Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I tried to add it as an image, hopefully this will work! Quote
£400 for a Penny ? Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 I would see this as a protest at the Public Order Act of 1936, which came into force in 1937.Oswald Mosely and his 'Blackshirts' were effectively banned and although this is not the symbol of the British Union of Fascists, I see it quite clearly as an act of fascist protest. Not really to do with the war I don't think.Don't worry about being on topic, feel free to ramble all over the shop, we do. I remember seeing a pre-war George VI penny in which the entire union jack had been re-cut into the shape of a swastika; went for quite a few quid on e-bay. George VI had hardly been popular with a section of the populace who wanted Edward VIII back. Given his reputed Nazi sympathies, it could well have been inspired by Moseley's National Union of Fascists. Quote

Not sure if they would have had access to coins though. Quote
