RLC35 Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Britain's Queen Elizabeth II arrived in the USA this week to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Jamestown settlement. It was the earliest settlement by the English in the New World. She is making a great impression for your country. She is very popular here.Tomorrow she is to attend the annual "Run for the Roses" at the Famed Kentucky Derby in Lousiville, KY. Louisville is about a 2 hour drive from Indianapolis, where I live. The Queen has horses stabled in Kentucky, and makes "unofficial" visits, on occasion, we are told by the newspapers.I thought it might be of some interest to you all.Bob C. scottishmoney Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Being of my extraction, Scottish and Irish, I could find it right easy to dislike the British monarchy for what it stands for, but I can only have deep admiration for Her Majesty as a representative of her nation and people. In fact I believe she probably has the least desirable position of any which one could wish to aspire to, being that in the public eye at all time with exposure of all her traits etc. I personally believe she has been a remarkable monarch, and in fact ranks as one of the 5 greatest British monarchs ever, which happens to in my opinion be populated by at least three Queens. She made a remarkably favourable impression upon myself during her visit to the West Coast of the USA in 1982, so much so that Her Majesty changed my hot tempered opin of Britain Long Live the Queen! And Very Long May She Reign! Quote
Chris Perkins Posted May 5, 2007 Posted May 5, 2007 Yes, generally, you can't really fault Her Maj can you. You could probably pick holes in the British monarchical system, but as a public fugure she really keeps her nose clean. I think a lot of people will loose respect for the British Monarchy once she's gone. Charles is basically a nice chap, but does sometimes upset entire minorities (much like his father). And William is no doubt also a nice young man, but his antics, though not as stupid as his brothers do cast a bit of a shadow. He is very popular though. Here in Germany they always talk about skipping Charles and moving straight to "Kaiser William" (they don't call him that!), which I think's a bit unfair. Charles should be given a turn, he was born to be a King. If his mum lives as long as her mum, he probably won't get long anyway! Quote

Jamesred Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 I had Prince Edward Duke ofKent for tea at the hotel today. He looks just like Prince Phillip (cousins)He is in jersey celebrating the 62nd anniversary of the Liberation of the Island.Personally (being a Scot) i have no time for the royals, but he was pleasant enough. Hussulo Posted May 9, 2007 Posted May 9, 2007 Personally I think the queen does a good job. She is a great ambassador for the country. The royals attract tourism, have no real powers (like they used to), and let's face it its not an easy job being in the limelight all the time. Celebrities usually choose to, but as a royal you are born into it and have no choice. Quote

scottishmoney Posted May 10, 2007 Posted May 10, 2007 I do believe in a Royalty, an elected Royalty along the lines of this:Daniela for QueenAll Hail to the Queen! Quote

For a country that saddled us with "Teflon" Tony and the dour scot next door, I think it ill behoves anyone north of Hadrians wall (he had some great ideas!) to slag off the Royal Family! Quote
