I find that Word is as good as any. I download pictures of the coin, obverse and reverse, then add the details below. Keeping to A5, I can get 3 coins per page and, if I use 90gm paper or heavier, I can print both sides and produce a 'Catalogue' of all my collection. It is easy to update as I use a loose leaf folder to hold it.

I use "Coin Elite" coin collecting software. You can enter your whole colection, using only the mouse, for all databases currently active.(mine has USA, Canada, and Mexico). You can also enter all other countries by manual entry. The website says Great Britian database is coming soon. With the specific county database, the program will price your collecton as you enter each item with the mouse. The program runs a multitude of reports, and valuations based on your requirements.

The website is www.trovesoftware.com. You can download a sampe program, and try it out for nothing. The cost is $79.00 USD for the program, complete with coin values. Updates each year can be purchased so your collection pricing is up to date with current $ values.

Right now I enter my US, Mexico, and Canadian collections automatically, and my Irish, British, and Australian collections manually (much like excel).

From what you are saying, I'm not sure this is the right way to go. Surely the info you need is the price you paid for it a this will have a more significant role in any insurance claim than any theoretical price for a coin in what will be a subjective grade, slabbed or otherwise. Any prices given by Spink, this Coin Elite program, Krause, CCGB or any other publication can only be an approximation to the market value as these change on a daily basis and from dealer to dealer, auction to auction. Unless the programmers have an all encompassing pricing database (which for $79 I doubt) it is unlikely to be very accurate. Very few coins are precisely Fine, VF, EF or UNC and so these prices are inevitably fairly meaningless. All pricing info also leads the average collector to inaccurate assessments of value because most people overgrade their coins.

I find excel spreadsheets suffice with pictorial folders (backed up to CD)

and a regular review of grades.......one day will that gEF will be UNC....no.

I have personally fallen into the trap...IF a respected dealer says it is VF and mine is better I've given mine GVF when its only really a NVF.

Forget Ebay grading and get back to basics...remember an EF is practically UNC with minute wear.

A VF very little wear but its obvious.

A Fine....absolute clear details(with hair) and NOT a Victorian silloette.

I guess agree with both Peter and Rob. Since value, for the most part, depends on grade and since there's a lot of lousy grading out there (a bit of wear on a Chas II coin is ok for VF but not for 'modern' coins (Vicky on to me...). There are too many 'VF' coins out there which to my eye are no better than Fine) purchase price is I guess the sensible yardstick for most purposes.

But then there is the question of what to do with coins bought for a 'bargain' price...

I keep a list on a spreadsheet and scans for reference and a printout of the pics to show people. I'm not sure there are enough sales of what I collect (or at least the less common examples) to make it possible for the software itself to update prices. More modern pieces may be a different matter....
