DmitryNYC Posted 16 hours ago Posted 16 hours ago Hi, iām wondering if this is a known variety or just an oddball. The 1 in the date is over another clearly separated 1 and the 4 appears to be both the plain and serif version at the same time. Any insight is much appreciatedĀ š 1 Quote
jelida Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago Just an oddball. Letters and digits on worn/filled dies were often repaired by re-punching, and not surprisingly these were often slightly misplaced. Of little extra interest unless the wrong punch has been used or the misplacement is extreme. As for the ā4ā it may just be a die flaw. Jerry 1 Quote
Peckris 2 Posted 1 hour ago Posted 1 hour ago Just to add a bitĀ more:Ā the first few years ofĀ theĀ changeover to bronze saw a helluva lot of repunching ofĀ date digitsĀ and legend letters. Bronze is a harder metalĀ than copper,Ā andĀ the coins were thinner inĀ size, soĀ dies got wornĀ relatively quickly. As well as that, the Mint is reported to have experienced a lot of problems caused by the change of metal, whichĀ the huge number of varieties (major, minor, and micro) inĀ the first few years can attest to.Ā Ā 1 Quote
