Alexander Masson Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) Sorry having trouble uploading photos and original post seems to have disappeared. I purchased this coin from the USA and the alignment is up/up instead of up/down. Also the weight is slightly off at 5.4 grams instead of 5.6grams. However under magnification I cannot see any difference between this and other shillings in my collection. The coin is not very valuable so if it is a good quality fake why bother and why make such a basic error as to get the alignment wrong. Any thoughts would be welcome. Paddy Posted May 23 Posted May 23 I would have to say probably a fake. As well as the orientation problem, there seems to be lots of irregularity in the denticles. 2 Quote
Citizen H Posted May 23 Posted May 23 by chance can we see the other side? Its bad when any fakes are sold and bought in good faith, fortunately it wasn't an expensive coin. 1 Quote
Martinminerva Posted May 23 Posted May 23 This is yet another of the many, many modern Chinese pressure cast white metal copies available on Alibaba and similar sites that we have been banging on about for a few years now. As well as alignment, the date digits are the wrong font (especially the zero in this case). Virtually all dates of shillings have been copied and they are increasingly seen on ebay and the like and dupe many collectors, novice and more experienced alike. Caveat emptor !! 2 Quote
Bruce Posted May 23 Posted May 23 the bubble near SH"I"LLING is another hint of possibly counterfeit. Deliberately doing an imperfect toned coin making it harder to spot a fake coin. 1 Quote
Martinminerva Posted May 23 Posted May 23 (edited) There is no "possible" about it - see this listing which I found in 30 seconds. (NB the word 'copy' is only on the picture, not the actual fake coin): https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256808503600495.html?gatewayAdapt=glo2usa4itemAdapt Beware ! VickySilver Posted May 25 Posted May 25 Fake, yes but the 1840 is not all that common a date in the shilling series. Quote
