1949threepence Posted January 27, 2021 Posted January 27, 2021 (edited) Somebody on facebook just posted this really interesting pic of the VICTORIA ON AN 1894 halfpenny. Looks like an inverted G for the O. Or it might just be an issue with the die. Edited January 27, 2021 by 1949threepence 2 Quote
mrbadexample Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 It's a pretty weird G? Very long middle bit. Quote
Rob Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Immediate reaction is that it doesn't appear to be the same font as the other G. That raises suspicion. A bigger picture would help. Quote
PWA 1967 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 Just looks like an O to me ,either the coin is damaged or the O is partly blocked. 1 Quote
Peckris 2 Posted January 28, 2021 Posted January 28, 2021 I can just make out the O - the G would be underlying if an error overstruck? Also, errors of that kind so late (i.e. after Mint electrification) are vanishingly rare except for dates. Interesting though. Quote
blakeyboy Posted February 1, 2021 Posted February 1, 2021 If you hit the '0' with a blunt small chisel with an oblique blow, it would cut the circle and 'pile up' some of the bronze, giving that look of the bar of a 'G'....and lo and behold, through the gap in the 'G', there is a shallow groove, looking to be a depression below the level of the field. The thinning of the 'O' above the 'bar' of the 'G' looks like the effect of localised corrosion. Maybe...:) 1 Quote
