Rob Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 Anybody know of a recommended person for the restoration of a wooden chest dating from 1900 including the wood, locks and hinges. I've got the ICON register, but most services are designed for less crudely constructed items, and remarkably there is no category for wooden containers. If it was Chippendale furniture - no problem. bagerap Posted August 21, 2017 Posted August 21, 2017 What sort of size Rob? Any photos. I'm time served as a cabinet maker but have not worked on the tools for a few decades. 1 Quote
bagerap Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Interesting piece. Too small for a blanket box but seriously heavyweight timber used. As a suggestion, the top could be rotated so that the damaged section by the hinge becomes the leading edge. From that point it's not too difficult to trim and add a matching fillet of suitable timber, probably with a few biscuit joints. How do those front catches work? Is it just finger pressure? Quote
bagerap Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Looking to be military, but for personal possessions rather than equipment. If it had the original hinges it would be easier to date. Quote
Rob Posted August 22, 2017 Author Posted August 22, 2017 It went on the Discovery in 1901 and I'm assuming it was standard issue for the expedition given the need to maximise packing efficiency. I thought I might contribute my tuppenceworth to preserving historical artefacts. Enquiries to Dundee gave me the ICON list of businesses that museums use, but no specialist in this area. The chest currently displayed on the boat is from a later expedition, so no chance to compare with an undamaged piece. Front catches are finger pressure. There is also a central lock. Unfortunately it has been used as a toolbox/general storage for as long as I can remember, hence the damage. Out of sight, out of mind at the back of the garage. Quote
Coinery Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Absolutely love items like this! I've seriously got to sit on my hands at the auctions! look forward to seeing pictures of the 'sensitively' restored item. I personally think little is more when it comes to restoration of items that were never meant to look glamourous in the first place. It's a difficult balance to get right, where it is finished, yet still carries with it the weight of its age and history. i keep promising myself a Tudor coffer chest, they're remarkable affordable. Occasionally you can even find them with the original date and betroval chiselled into them. Love history! Quote

Get one and seal it, then you can use it as a dinghy to tow behind the barge It's the only way you could accommodate it. Quote
Coinery Posted August 22, 2017 Posted August 22, 2017 Aye, 'tis true, Rob, you're right of course! It's an historic castle that I really need! Quote
