UPINSMOKE Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 There are a couple of coins coming up in my local Auction House that I am interested in. I am wondering if these are worth going for they are estimated at £20-40 what do you think on condition and value please. I am not desperate for then but just may have a go if any of you think it may be worth it. Quote
Stuntman Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 Is it a penny and a halfpenny, or a twopence and a penny? The larger coin is the only one you'd probably want, and I imagine would be worth more if a penny. It would cost more than £40 from a dealer whether a penny or twopence. Quote

According to the auction catalog they are A 1797 cartwheel penny and an 1806 2d coin if that is any help. I don't normally look at these as a rule so know nothing of values etc. You are right only interested in the Cartwheel penny really as that is the best condition. Just thought I may get a bargain assuming that the price stays withing that range of estimate. That's why I was asking about values. Quote
mrbadexample Posted February 16, 2017 Posted February 16, 2017 I think it's a twopence and a penny. Nice edges on the 2d and a reasonable price if within estimate I would say. Quote
DaveG38 Posted February 17, 2017 Posted February 17, 2017 In my experience, coins in local Auction Houses often go for rather more than they would in a specialised coin auction. I also find that estimates are often much lower than the realistic price, so don't be surprised if this lot doesn't go for rather more than the top end estimate. If it doesn't then its a fair buy, especially the cartwheel since that has very nice edges and details. Quote
Leo Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Lot 2469 of this upcoming LCA auction is in EF and estimated at £225-275. Better than the one in your photo but really can't tell, the edges are very good but the photo is taken at an angle probably to not to show the wear. If the coin is VF it could drop to £50. I would study as many past prices and qualities as you can and then go and see the coin in hand. Having said that, a cartwheel penny is one of the British coins with the most historical significance, if not the most, so highly desirable in my opinion and will always be easy to sell. Take an informed guess and go for it! Quote
Coinery Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 The thickness makes me think 2d, but I haven't access to a book to confirm by portrait. Regardless, you would have to walk a long mile to find an example, especially of a 2d, with rims like that! A bargain in my opinion! Clean the other coin up and chuck it on eBay to offset some of your costs! ? Quote
Coinery Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Just cast an eye over that neck mark and eyebrow to make sure there's nothing untoward. It'll have been cleaned before, but it's starting up a new tone already. Quote
Rob Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 Forget the portrait. The trident pointing to the legend says it is a twopence. Quote

Stuntman Posted February 18, 2017 Posted February 18, 2017 It' cannot be an 1806 2d anyway. So the lot is a cartwheel twopence and an 1806 penny. The penny isn't worth all that much (£10 absolute tops?) but I agree about the edges on the twopence being very good. Here are my two examples of the same coins. I paid £36 for the 1806 penny a couple of years ago and I've had the cartwheel twopence about 35 years, it was a combined birthday and Christmas present from my parents when I was a schoolboy! 1 Quote
UPINSMOKE Posted March 2, 2017 Author Posted March 2, 2017 Hi Guys sorry have not replied sooner. Thank you so much for all your advice. I did manage to win the coins in the auction for a total of £48 for the two so pleased with that. Below some pictures of the purchased coins. Please let me know what you think and any possible values as a guide for me please. Quote
declan03 Posted May 30, 2017 Posted May 30, 2017 About £30 tops for the cartwheel penny and £5 for the 1806 on a good day. So not a bad buy. Quote

Spot on with the 1806 thats what I sold it for as for the 1797 I have just sold this on eBay for £58 so did all right I think. Bought them in a local auction not really what I collect so decided to try and get a small profit towards something else. Quote

Good luck in the future. Quote
