Hello guys. I have just joined the forum and would like to ask a question about my recently bought Gothic crown. I am a coin collector from China studying in the UK. So I would like to apologise for people from my countries making so many fakes. I bought this Gothic crown off a very reliable trader but people from Chinese coin forums are calling it a fake, so I am very confused now and would like to seek help from you experts. Did I manage to buy something made in China or was it made in UK? Thank you very much if you can help me!

So fakes are bothering even the Chinese now. Can you weigh the coin?

First guess, I'd say it looks clean.

It weighs 28 grams exact. Most of the fake coins from China are actually Chinese. In China, we call it getting 'drugged'. There are so many fake Chinese coins around that I even have a tin box for all the fake coins that i got 'drugged'. Well, to be honest, this is the first time that I have bought a British coin and suspecting whether it is a fake. Personally, with all the experiences of dealing with Chinese 'drug dealers', I don't think it is fake, but you guys are the experts. So I thought it might be a good idea seeking help here.

Apology accepted. :D

Seriously though, if it wasn't China it would be somewhere else, and I don't think we can hold you responsible. ;)

I think your crown looks genuine, although I'm no expert at all. I hope so anyway, it's a lovely coin.

Haha, thank you Sir. We Chinese collectors are in fact the biggest victim. The Chinese coin market has been booming for the past 10, 20 years and the high profit has driven many people to start making fake coins (mostly Chinese coins). Some of the very high end silver coins are actually made by the Taiwanese and Japanese now. The quality of those fakes are absolutely crazy, very very hard to tell.

C'mon Garrett, help us rookies out a bit? :P What makes it suspicious? I can't see anything about it I'm not happy with, although to be fair I've never had one of these in hand. I should be so lucky.

Here's the old thread abouth Gothic Crown forgeries. The coin in question doesn't have the same marks as those forgeries - so if counterfeit it's from a different source.

No worries I am a rookie too.  I just zoomed in for a close look, then did a side-by-side between the coin and the genuine one.

If the thread starter has any serious concerns perhaps he could get CGS to have a look.

cheers Garrett.

Thank you very much! Just saw your reply....

No worries perhaps I zoomed in too far, the lions legs look funny as do a couple of other areas.

Don't mean to offend, I maybe should have made a better post in the first place before I rushed out the door.

Good luck with your studies !

Sorry for bothering you Garrett, but would you please tell me which bit of the coin is different with the genuine one? Is the edge?

I purchased an advertised fake on Ebay to sit next to my real coin.

The pictures on here look just like the fake I have , just a lot more ware on this one. When we get high resolution pictures we will be able to tell

Welcome Tommy,The gothic crown is notorious in being faked. There are many experienced collectors who have been duped and probably many crowns sit in collections with the collector unaware. The problem with yours is that it seems to have been quite heavily circulated and this would be extremely rare(unheard of for a proof)If you submitted this to CGS they would authenticate(or not)the coin. The source of your purchase would be a good starting point.

This is another forum I am a member of and these gothics have been discussed at length.Hope this helps

Welcome and thanks for posting the image- It certainly gives us something to examine and think about. From the image, I simply am unable to say with absolute certainty. The coin is obviously worn-likely a high end VG10 by US Standards. If it is a counterfeit, I think the likelihood is that it is a contemporary counterfeit from back in the day- It just does not have the look of a modern fake.

Some counterfeit coins can be deceptive in terms of the quality.
