RossK Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 (edited) Hi folks, I am looking for some help with this penny my dad has had for years. I said I would try and find out some info on it for him. I tried googling and found some info about one sided pennies being used for pub games hence the one flat side. This coin though isn't flat, it has the reverse imprint of the queens head and a raised ridge around the edge which I tried to capture in the photos. I though some of you knowledgeable lot could help with the reason its like this (maybe its common?) and an idea of value if it is worth anything? Thanks for your help! Coppers Posted March 13, 2016 Posted March 13, 2016 Not 100% certain on this, so you had best wait for someone more expert than I to respond, but it looks as if it might be the result of a die cap, where an earlier strike stuck to the reverse die. Subsequent coins struck using the same pair of dies would turn out to be brockages with clear incuse image of the obverse on the reverse of the coin struck. As more and more coins are struck the die cap flattens out and you end up with a more or less blank reverse with a rather unclear mushy image of the obverse similar to your father's coin.. Quote
