    Another 1874H, also on ebay. Think this is F73 - OBV 7 REV H, but looks to me like Gouby rev ja which doesn't fit with F73 <scratches head> <removes splinters from fingernails>. Where have I gone wrong please? Is it Gouby j?

    Hi PNMY, I did note that mine was a middle pointing (ESC 1951, no stop after REX). The detail on the edge is interesting. Please let us know your findings.

    I believe it was fairly common as a means of preservation / protection before we knew better.

    Can't really help Mike other than to say I got a cartwheel 2d in an auction lot that I'm sure had been previously lacquered as there was a bit left on the edge. Came off ok with a bit of acetone. Is it worth looking at the edges to see if there's any trace? Probably more likely there than on the other surfaces. Looks like a nice enough piece to me though.

    Yes, ESC records the first leaf pointing to the right of the E, the upright of the E (as Paddy's above) or the middle of the E, like mine:

    I've often thought about doing just that. Win the auction, give it a couple of hours then send the seller a message saying "I'm terribly sorry but I can't go through with this transaction as I've since been advised that it's fake." I don't see how ebay could take any action against you, although you might be limited in the number of times you'd get away with the same trick. Perhaps we should take it in turns?
