This one on ebay has the same flaw, and is graded by CGS, so it's strange that they have not picked up on the flaw. Perhaps the one which you bought Rash was noted by the seller, as opposed to the auction house? Who knows, maybe this is why they don't crop up as much. Link

Thanks R, perhaps the moniker for the GV clashes has been coined off the back of the Victoria 'Crows foot'. I did wonder how on earth it looks like a birds foot in the first place I might drop a message to John and see if he has anything more, maybe he read about it somewhere? A big gap between you buying one and then seeing another though!

Thanks Pete. Here's the link to that penny (I follow Topcarp he always has great coins), and that's MUCH more like a birds foot than the GV exmaples.. Didn't know it extended to Victorian series too though, is there any literature on it? This must be a die clash too, it's a lot more obvious where it came from on this type.

David Groom's excellant new book arrived yesterday, and the bird's foot is illustrated! Interestingly he states it is found in lots of years for GeorgeV pennies. I wonder if others are associated with die cracks, and whether there is any correlation with the degree of ghosting on the reverse. I found a 1913 penny today, with the same birds foot flaw. And when I play with the pictures of my example I can get the folds in the dress to match up against the neck flaw, it's got to be a clashed die. But I'd never seen this flaw on anything other than the 1918kn, so this is a first for me. Pictures attached of the 1913 and also my comparison shots. (the yellow is from the reverse, which overlays the flaw indentically). Just in case anyone else finds it interesting!

Yeah, he'll be talking about copper pennies though as they weigh 18.8 grams. Hopefully he's not comparing a copper to a bronze

They should all be 18.8, but like copper says, there aren't many forgeries of these out there, and the ones that are fake, are obvious.. Honestly though, weighing them isn't really going to tell you if they're fake, just find an example of the same year on a dealer's site and compare the lettering and the general look of it. If you're literally just asking the weight lenience on a penny, then I'd go with +/- 0.1g and the diameter should be exactly the same on all, unless there's an obvious problem with the coin.

None of them should be heavier without an obvious reason why (thicker flan, retained cud, etc.) but best advice is to get some books and compare coins against coins and against other pictures. Most people would be using their eye to detect a fake Vic penny or half penny, the details and placement of certain parts of the design or things like that. Weight would just serve as a second assurance, after all it's easy to weigh out a piece of metal to match, not so easy to copy the design 100%.

By right, wouldn't that make every wide date 1880 an 8 over 8? Also, the 0 is further along in the wide date, so would that have been an overdate as well?

I don't think it'll return much for you, I got mine from eBay a year or 2 a go for £50, there's also one floating around on eBay starting at £70 or so and it just gets relisted over and over. While it's a nice error I don't think you'll get a lot back unless you pick one up for under £20.
