  1. I've actually sold a book to the Netherlands at the weekend through this - as a seller, you don't find out until you come to arrange postage. I was only provided with the buyers name and reference number and then the address of the company who would facilitate onward transfer which was in Normanton, Derbyshire.
  2. I thought i remembered a discussion about the books, I have been keeping my eyes peeled! Yes he is fantastic!
  3. Has anyone started watching this on bbc4? It looks quite good from the first two episodes!
  4. Thanks everyone. Knowledge is definitely the key and I'm a long way from that point!
  5. Thanks for both your insights. It's not that I'm doing it for investment reasons it's just where I can afford it, I like the knowledge of knowing it is rare. I just wonder if this is a bit of a folly now.
  6. Hi guys, a little while since I last posted - we've recently go engaged so money is being diverted elsewhere for the time being! With regard to the above mantra, could I ask your opinion on buying rare coins? I have a catch 22 situation going on because there's a part of me that quite likes knowing I have the / one of the rarest coin in a series (within my budget - I'm obviously not talking about the mega-bucks coins), so for instance, I recently bought a 1946 3d in AUNC however this obviously set me back a little compared to if I'd bought the same grade 1944 for instance which would then have enabled me to then buy more coins for the same outlay. I know that ultimately it's my decision, but is this pursuit foolish, or is there any merit in buying these more rare coins when budget allows in comparison to their more copious cousins? I would however like to say that I am pragmatic - I bought a 1902 florin purely as it was less costly than others in that series. Thanks for any opinions
  7. Thanks Rob
  8. Hi Guys, been a while since I posted, I've not had any money so have tried not to look at coins so that I wouldn't be tempted Anyway, I have dipped my toes in again, and have bought the following 1787 6d off eBay. In all likelihood I'm going to contact the seller because what I have received is not the item in the picture. However, before I do that, could you just cast your eyes over it? I notice that the "A"s in Gratia on the obverse are unbarred, also on the reverse, the "A.T.E.T.E" seems to be more bold than the rest of the letters and the "87" in the 1787 does not seem to be too well aligned. What are your thoughts on this?
  9. I came across the following today. I just instantly associate anyone who uses the word "portfolio" with being a knobhe@d!! Ive been asked regularly in recent weeks: But where are the rare coins? Since you acquired Baldwins, I expected to see a selection of coins on offer for portfolio diversification, but all your recent posts have been about stamps! The truth of the matter is, the rare coin market is hot at the moment ever since the New York coin fair in January, sales have been strong - and even a merchant as prestigious and well connected as Baldwins is having to work even harder to find enough material of quality to satisfy both the vibrant collector market as well as an increasing number of interested investors. Clearly, were doing our best to address this, whilst of course maintaining a strict adherence to quality and rarity, (the key elements which drive the potential for long term growth) - and ensuring we buy at a reasonable price. Having said all that we have managed to put together a small selection of just such items, rare gold and silver coins from the ancient Egyptian to the Roman to the ancient Greek. For me, the standout piece is the magnificent gold Aureus of Emperor Commodus (A.D. 177-192). The Aureus is highly sought after due to its rarity and purity - this is a striking portrait of Commodus, still resonating through the centuries, a well struck coin, extremely fine and very rare. Its priced at £38,000 and can be included in portfolio or purchased outright as a keeper. To register your interest, click here or email investment@stanleygibbons.com. But as youll see, the face and intricate design of each coin resonates with history and each tells its own story, whether it's the head of Hercules wreathed in a lion skin or Jupiter on the charge, holding a sceptre and hurling a thunderbolt. Please note this isnt one of those marketing clichés this small selection will disappear fast, so if youre remotely interested, do get in touch as soon as you can.
  10. Yeah I was taking the pee pee! Thanks for the helpful feedback guys! Out of typical ebay sellers
  11. Yeah I was taking the pee pee! Thanks for the helpful feedback guys!
  12. Apologies for the tongue in cheek subject heading, however, I was wondering if people could give some 'business advice'. I have been going through my granddad's pennies I inherited and now knowing that if there's a little H or KN on certain dates, makes them a more rare coin. In so doing, I have discovered the following: 5 x 1912 H 1 x 1918 KN 2 x 1919 H None of them are in anything better than Fine and I'm not even considering keeping them, so in terms of realising the best price for them, would people advise selling them in little "lots" (obviously limited by the fact there are fewer 1918 and 1919) or sell them all individually? Thanks Richard
  13. Thanks Paulus and coinery. I hope one day, I'll have half the knowledge you guys have!
  14. Hijacking Goomolique's thread, I now have CCGB 2014 and Grading British Coins and have just ordered a copy of Freeman. Could anyone advise other key texts but also, are there any specifically devoted around the George III reign? Thanks, Richard
  15. That's really helpful guys and reassuring. I must admit I don't know much about them and it was just a spur of the moment purchase
  16. You're sure that wasn't the cat? ?
  17. I've just bought what on the surface looks like a very nice condition 1935 Florin, however the die rotation seems to be more like 90 degrees (though I note on my other florins from the same period, they seem a bit off, but maybe more like 45 degrees). Is this a commonly faked coin and are there any other tell tale signs to look out for? Aside from that apparent anomaly there's nothing that would arouse suspicion.
  18. Alcohol, the cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems!! Seriously though, I gott best mark at uni after 3 beers and my French becomes exponentially better with each quaf of the vino! ?
  19. Thanks Peter. Yeah I love the sixpence, my favourite so far! Ok so don't do acetone as default on the whole coin? And yes my adhesives arrived today, proper excited! ??????
  20. Have I seen somewhere that people use acetone (from pharmacists, not nail varnish remover) for their coins prior to storing them. I've finally got around to ordering some 2x2s and am going to start sorting things out and want to make sure I follow the correct procedure. Is there anything else to do? Cheers
  21. Hi guys, before I started getting into coins on a more serious level, I picked up these two roman coins. I don't even know where to begin when it comes to identifying them, is anyone able to advise. Also, do you have an idea of value as I'll probably look to sell. Cheers, rich
  22. Having googled the 1933 penny last week, I've been looking more and more at pennies and am really starting to appreciate their beauty. I'm starting to think that my collecting focus is going to shift from Georgie Boy the third, to pennies.
  23. That's the one, I take it that's a good'un then ?
  24. Yeah sorry, I'm not always the clearest. No it's one that I've seen that I'm interested in.
