  1. Welcome John Good luck with finding a coin from every ruler from William I, that is quite an ambition. Metal detecting is a hobby I plan to try sometime, and I am very jealous of you lot who can find such old coins ! (and no doubt in softer bloody soil too !!). cheers Garrett.
  2. Hi Lastpave Looks like you've done well and identified the coins correctly. A charming bunch of coins to start off a hobby that may well turn into a lifetime of enjoyment. Congrats again on jagging a William shilling in change. amazing. cheers Garrett.
  3. Hi Alan Welcome to the forum and well done on your finds ! Metal detecting is a hobby I am considering getting into sometime down the track although I am unlikely to ever find a 1699 coin ! I have watched a few YouTube videos and watched a fellow pull a P&M sixpence (might have been a groat) out of the ground. Amazing. cheers Garrett.
  4. Oh and please excuse me... Welcome to the forum and coin collecting !
  5. Wow amazing, you were handed a 1699 shilling in your change ?! That's something that would not happen in Oz. Yes the pictures will help, there is a thread in the beginners section on posting pics. Alternatively, seeing as you suspect you know what the coins are you could type "1699 shilling" into Google images (google.com and click on 'images') and see if you get a match. cheers Garrett.
  6. Congratulations and thanks for the advice !
  7. Thanks for the info guys ! Very interesting ! The eBook I have mentions a rock to the left of the lighthouse for reverse 'C' and 'D' which I couldn't see. There were no pictures so I didn't know how big the rock should be. I will try to get a magnifying glass and have a closer look. One day I will probably be interested in getting a more comprehensive reference book so I will probably be asking more questions about good books later. I bought the penny for the educational value, but it is a charming little thing and I'll keep it a while I think. I get the occasional flashback to my childhood when I look at it. Yes Peck, my trigger finger has certainly done worse in the past !! cheers and thanks again Garrett.
  8. Okay well here I am about week and a half ago having just received my "Collectors Coins GB" in e-book format having a read about 17 (SEVENTEEN) circulating types of 1860 pennies. Later that same evening I am perusing eBay when what do I see. WOW ! an 1860 penny. I try to identify what type it is but because I have had a few festive beverages I cant work it out. Anyway the invevitable happens and I place a bid (why cant we lock outselves out of eBay and FaceBook when we are over the limit !) so I can get it and have a good look. Coin arrives and I still cannot work out what I've got !! Anyway - from my other new ebook purchase I can see it is in around fine condition. Probably the funniest part of the story is that I only paid $3 + 2$ post (~ 2.7 pounds) so it looks like reasonable value which must be unusual for an inebriated impulsive eBay purchase ... ha haha Okay - so the story is not so funny. Carry on. PS - does anyone know what bloody reverse it is ? A ? (but the thumb looks like it touches the cross) In too low condition to tell ?
  9. That might be a soft strike or a worn die (or something) on the obverse. The reverse is much better.
  10. LOL ! I was going to say looks like he's been into the inventory. Nice token !
  11. I cant see the postage as it doesn't ship to Australia but is it more than 325 pounds ?? That would be extraordinary ! Nice Shilling though. Looks to be in a slab but the label not shown.... cheers Garrett.
  12. You could try clearing your browser cache but this looks like eBay's problem. You have cleared out your searches but they still register with eBay. Maybe log out from eBay then back in again. Else I suspect that the problem will right itself when eBay restart their servers, but you could send them an email if you like. cheers Garrett.
  13. Downloaded to my iPhone and working well ! thanks Chris.
  14. Thanks for the information everyone, great stuff !!
  15. Hi everyone I bought a 1737 3 over 5 overdate in the latest Noble auction. I know a little about overdates, e.g. if a 1857 die gets used the next year (1858) the 8 will be over the remains of the 7. How does a 1737, 3 over 5 come about ? Did the person cutting the die make a mistake with the 5 then put the 3 over it ? Can anyone enlighten me ? cheers Garrett.
  16. Hope everyone had/having a great Christmas !! I made it through and am now up early to get everything done that needs doing before the Boxing Day test !
  17. Yep, me too. Interesting discussion and thanks to everyone for taking the time to answer. Makes sense now. cheers Garrett.
  18. Thanks very much for the replies and great information everyone. Much appreciated !
  19. Hi everyone Another quick question. I've read that a lot of the crowns e.g. the gothic crown and crowns after 1902 were commemorative and not issued for circulation. Given that I've seen some of these crowns in grades lower than EF does that indicate that they did see circulation, even though they might not have been issued as such ? Thanks for any info ! Just interested that's all.... cheers Garrett.
  20. Hi everyone Just a quick question, I've been reading about the shortage of silvers in the late 1700's and early 1800's leading up to the re-coinage in 1816. Bank tokens were issued, foreign coins were counter-stamped with George III image. If there was such a shortage, why is it so easy to buy 1787 shillings and sixpences these days in really good condition these days ? I would have thought they would have copped a hammering. Was there a hoard found sometime later ? Cheers Garrett.
  21. Make sure to give negative feedback !
  22. Re: Varieties Maybe eventually there will be two versions of the book, with many more of the varieties into the e-book version. I carry a library in my top pocket, and it doesn't really matter if some of the books in it have a thousand pages. cheers Garrett.
  23. Will let the experts grade it (as I dont have the coin grading book yet) but it's a beautiful coin and I would love to upgrade to something like that !!
